PTO winches

There is a problem in using PTO driven winches for self recovery that can make them less desireable than electric winches. When you are stuck it is not uncommon to use the tires to help the winch move the vehicle. With a PTO driven winch (mechanical or hydraulic) you can either use the winch all by itself or you can use the tires to assist the winch but you must spin the tires faster than the winch is spooling in which can dig some really good trenches. With an electric you can put just enough pressure on the tires to help without spinning them. A PTO winch is strong but it is not the best choice for self recovery IMHO. I have a PTO winch so this is from personal experience.

I asked New Venture about this, and they suggested the following contacts:

All Transmission - 1-800-237-8601

Blumenthals - 1-888-236-4800

Midwest Transmission - 1-888-824-2012

Why not gear the PTO/Winch to match the wheel speed in low/4low.

Does you winch pull slower than you can crawl in low gear?

Once I ran accross a sight that had a combination PTO driven air compressor and electric generator in one unit. That was nice.

Some of the reading I have done on the milemarker winches indicates the power steering pump is perfectly acceptable.

I'm still looking for a small PTO air compressor... . looked for a while online and only found tractor PTO stuff... . or HUGE compressors capable of running jack hammers...

Anyone find a nice small unit that would inflate tires, etc. ?

Thanks,

Matt
