Puffing Smoke

Hi all, I have a 05 2500 blowing heavy black smoke while under light load and floored. Light load means A/C on or off going up an on ramp to freeway not towing anything. There are no mod's all stock, the dealer just told me that this is normal. But I have talked to others with the same truck and have been told theirs do not smoke or have just a slight puff under heavy acceration.



So my question is is this normal? If not does any know of a good dealer in Orange County, CA that could take my truck too.

I would say its not normal for a stock truck! It could be a boost leak? does the truck seem to have full power?

My 05 does the same thing and my friend's 05 also does the same. It seems to be a trait with the common rail injection. If I start out slow from a stoplight and someone is tailgating, I mash the pedal when I hit 4th gear, it will really billow the black smoke, and the tailgating problem is finished :-laf

A grey haze after driving at a constant speed for a while is normal. Black smoke other than a small puff is not normal. The emissions controls and defueling do not allow these trucks to smoke in stock form.



Black smoke on acceleration is usually an indication of a bad rail pressure relief valve and is usually accompanied by high EGT's. That is not the only cause but it is a common one. Have the dealer put their DRBIII reader on it and drive it while comparing requested rail pressure with actual pressure and that will tell if the relief valve is bad.

My truck did the same thing until I went to the dealer for the first service, he said they installed the latest software on it (I really don't know if it's a TSB or something like that).

Anyway, after that, the truck doesn't smoke anymore, I'm even a little worried now, I know a little smoke its normal but the truck just doesn't do it anymore even at WOT.

I do notice that my Temperature comes up just over 200 degrees when this happens and drops when I let off the pedal. As for power it does seem a little weak in the power or sluggish, I don't expect it to lunch like a rocket but be a little more responsive when I hit the pedal. It almost acts like the trans is not down shifting when I accelerate.

Mine would always roll a good black puff of smoke when getting on the throttle hard after a while of driving it easy (back when I was stock and had a cat and the stock muffler installed). It took about 100 miles of easy driving to build up enough to make a real nasty black cloud. Just like a skunk in that you get a shot or two to use and then you need to go ahead and recharge for a while... lol

Sounding more and more like rail relief valve. Mine doesn't get over 200 degrees unless I load it heavy. Do you have any hard starting issues? Extended cranking times?

As a matter a fact I do have a hard time starting. I will sometimes have to shut the key off after cranking a few times. I thought it might of been the computer not booting up. Now I jump in turn the key on but don't start for a couple of seconds. Didn't really make much difference.

That may be asking a bit much! Anyways, welcome to the TDR RBroswell!! How about posting a sig for yourself so we all know what you drive, also, location can prove beneficial also at times!

Sounds like my friends 05, I wouldn't worry too much. Does it happen when the motor is cold and hot? Down in balmy SoCal a few good throttle-stomps gives him ~200 deg. even in January. Also, he has had great success with Glenn E. Thomas in Long Beach (don't know what plugs are allowed), I know its a pinch north of Orange County but he seems to think its worth it. To wit: when replacing the factory muffler, he noticed less smoke/haze at the bottom end, not too much of a surprise I suppose. Hope this helps-

My 05 is absolutely stock and it never does this. The only time I get any smoke, at all, is when I floor it to merge into freeway traffic. Even then it is just a little smoke. If it is as bad as you say you should have it looked at...
