Dumb Question: Im looking @ dump trailers and am kinda torn between 2. Help me decide... A 8x16 single wheel 14k GVW or the heavier duty 8x16 dual wheel 20k GVW. I want to be able to haul a lot of gravel, concrete, shingles etc. Only thing is Ive only got a 3/4 ton (dont want a one ton again too wide) Will the 20k trailer (7,250 lbs. empty) pull the guts out of my truck??? Remember I got an auto trans. Am thinking of adding a set of Air-Ride 5k bags to help. (also the converter and valve body will be done sometime in April) I guess let me know how much weight you guys are pullin and if this is too heavy. Im looking for longevity here!!!!

i've pulled a 14k with my truck and if it were my trailer i would have to get a gooseneck. The bumper pull really beats on the truck when it is loaded.

Having Pulled Similar Trailers With Both Of My Trucks I Have Found The 3500 Handles The Load Ok On The Bumper But The 25oo Begs For A Gooseneck In That Kind Of Load. As Far As The Power Train Goes You Have Plenty Of Truck For Either One Imo.

Coincidentally, I just bought a 7X12 12KGVW dump trailer two weeks ago (tandem axle. ) I think you will soon be disappointed iwith a single axle trailer if you are going to load it up. My trailer is a tag-along. 12K is about all I want to pull from a hitch, and if you go that route I highly recommend a weight-distributing hitch (I have one. ) When I apply the tension to the WD hitch I can see the rear bumper go up.

Above 12K I agree a gooseneck is the way to go.

Just my two cents worth.

You always have low in the transfer case. I would recommend using it, any time you get off the hard surfacel. This will help the t/c and transmission lots. Less slipping trying to get the trailer moving in soft going.

As far as the weight, you will have plenty of power, and drivetrain, but like said above, I would get a gooseneck, and stay away from bumper hitches. This is coming from a guy that has been pulling goosenecks for many years. I get scared seeing heavy loads hooked to the bumper of even large trucks.

Definitely go with the tandem axle trailer because you never know what you might want to throw in the trailer. Get yourself a B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitch, a good brake controller, keep your E-rated tires aired up, and go for it.

Like the others have said, you have plenty of truck. See my Reader's Rig gallery of the dual tandem dump gooseneck I pull. That trailer has a tare weight of over 9K. Again, like the others have said, just put it in 4-low at dump time.

Go for the big boy, can never have enough trailer in my book !! Definitely go gooseneck though, notice my sig! ;)

Thanks guys guess I should have specified either trailer I get will definately be a goose. Ive pulled tag my whole life and heard there is nothing that compares to Goose or 5thrs. Ill let you know when I get it just saving money to do a couple upgrades to truck first. i. e. converter, valve body, goose neck plate, brake controller Im pretty sure I want air bags to help support all this. Also the first roof I do this spring is going to buy Banks Techni-Cooler :-laf

Check eBay for your brake controller: Tekonsha Prodigy or one of their re-branded controllers like Draw-Tite, etc.

Gooseneck plate? I wouldn't. Get an engineered system like B&W or Diamond, etc. , something that is out of the way on weekends, but designed to handle the pin load.

You can get the B&W for around $500. I bought mine installed from my local Line-X dealer for around $700 - peace of mind is worth a lot when you're pulling that much trailer. http://www.turnoverball.com or http://www.diamondhitchinc.com

goose neck

Ever heard of Curt manufacturing??? Looks real nice I think thats what Im getting. Ball up and ball down levers inside wheel well, no need to get in the bed. Thanks for your help guys
