Competition Pulling advice

I have pulled before but not with my newer truck. I used to have a 99 5spd 4x4 ext cab shortbed w/ TST powermax 3 adj. , 275's, guages, and ceramic clutch from TST.





Now I have a 2002 HO 4x4, ext cab, long bed, and 6 spd w/ the edge ez and gauges with stock clutch. Will it hold? and how should I come off the line?



My old truck I would leave at about 2100 rpms or so and then put the hammer down



I am not planning on doing this alot just at the local fair.

I have seen MANY OEM clutches go up in smoke..... even with the mild HP trucks.



If it were me and I were about to put in a new clutch, I'd hook... . but unless you already have a new 'pulling' clutch just waiting to go in - you might want to spare your clutch from the abuse.



3rd gear low range is what the manual transmission guys use - for the most part. Some guys grab a gear at 1/2 track... . while others pull in 4th gear... ... I have a feeling your OEM clutch will turn to dust if you hook.....



I could be wrong... . but that's my $. 04 worth.

Not to rob from your post but I have the same clutch with #10 plate, 300 marine injectors, and a 3K GSK what gear would you recommend using with the TST clutch?

I pulled 4 times with TST's clutch last year. Each time, I pulled in low range 3rd (5 speed). One word of warning, I burned mine up quickly pulling with it.

Last year I pulled with my stock clutch and a Comp. Just slipped it long enough at lower RPM's until it started moving and let it on out. I pulled twice within 10 minutes and did'nt have any problems. Just don't let it slip too much. HTH.

I'm ready for a SBC that I WON'T be pulling on..... or a mitchel single disk

Keep the truck light, 20" hitch or less, stock tires, do not air down, low rpm as possible, abosolute minimum slipping, ease into th e power, never hook twice within a week, gives it time to get the glazing off.



It should last three pulls!!!!



Don't feel bad when it burns up, I went through a $1000 clutch following that same advice.

Thanks for the advice. What kind of clutch would you guys suggest? Probably wont put any other mods on except maybe 275's.



Something streetable. My last ceramic clutch was to jerky.

I went with the twin disc puller from EEP. I purposly slipped it at 2700 rpm for about 75ft last Saturday night at my first pull. This thing is worth its weight in gold! Perfect launch. It is a daily driver, too. I picked this clutch for cheap insurance so I could pull at a few of the local county fairs and still be able to drive it home.

I have talked to guys that have had well over 100 hooks on one clutch and only had to adjust it once in the las 4 or 5 years.

I got 3rd place with 283'. 1st was @309', 2nd was @290' and 4th was @272'. There were 15 trucks in that class.

Justin... its really hard too say, as everybody is so tight-lipped about there trucks.

But, I know the Dodge that won is an 01 etc with an auto that also happen to smoke pretty good and flat out flys down the track. The PS that took second... I have no clue.



This much I do know... when the 4th place truck gets a clutch, he will be way ahead of me, unless I get stacks first. :-laf
