Need contact info on contractors working for FEMA hiring subcontractors to haul campers from Selma, Purvis, Jackson, or Baton Rogue to sites were they will be used. Have a friend wanting to put his Dodge to work for a while.

TIA

I saw a few Rv's with "FEMA" on the windows with a red marker headin south on I65 yesterday. They were being pulled by new chevys 2500 gassers also marked fema. I guess where ever they came from is donating the trucks, too.

FEMA Hauling

I just got back Saturday night from my first run to Baton Rouge.

I am all set up to take another down on Wednesday.

I was told that FEMA ordered a total of 160,000 units to be brought down, but that they are currently on hold after this weeks batch. They want to take inventory of what they have vs what they need.

I just called a local rv dealer after seeing this on the news and hauled independant. They provided new hitches, load dist bars, spare tires etc. It pays $1,650 and you take your fuel and food out of it.

I think the balance of their needs will be filled by contractors for Horizon Transport etc. Saw a ton of these guys down there. It was a very disorganized mess in Baton Rouge. Hopefully will be better this week in Purvis, Mississippi.

Better get back to changing my oil etc before my next run.

Happy to answer any questions.

Awesome- Where did the money come from - the dealership? I called one and they said FEMA Is organizing it. It looks like they are subcontracting to Horizon/Bennet/Hoosier which honestly makes the most sense since that is what these guys do for a living although it doesn't seem like anyone likes working for those guys :)

I can't believe Horizon is still only paying a dollar a mile when fuel has doubled in cost. You don't get paid on return trip so your automatically down to 50 cents a mile. If you got 10 miles per gallon at $3. 00 a gallon that's 30 cents a mile. 20 cents a mile left to pay for truck parts, food, board and bills... . ouch

You got paid when you returned. I think the RV dealer was cutting the checks.

I thought $1650 was darn good money even if it was one way. From here that is about $1. 50 per mile. That is better than Horizon pays.

I was very surprised they allowed independants to haul vs. going though a broker.

Are there any rv dealers in the St. Louis area doing this? Can you do this on weekends only? I have the truck, insurance, class a cdl, but only weekends to do it.

That is great what you are doing Eric. I wish there was something more that I could do from up here in the northwest. If you here of anything in my area, please post it. I am in Portland, OR. It would sure be nice to help out all those people down there in the south. Keep up the good work.

Out team is getting $1. 45 per mile out of the DFW area. The only drop point that I have had a report on is Purvis, Ms. My guy said he was checked in and out in 5 minutes... ... ... ... ... ... then the exit route took him thru the woods and he finally came out somewhere on old US 11 west of Purvis... ... .....

Another Run

I am headed out tomorrow at 3pm from GR Mich.

6 of us travelling together from Terry Town RV.

Last run was to Baton Rouge, this run is to Purvis Miss.

I hear FEMA has temporarily postponed orders while they take inventory to

confirm their needs.

I will let you all know when I get back if FEMA has fired up the orders again.

Call some dealers near you, or call the manufacturers. As I understand it

they are currently only building FEMA units now.

Also seems like Horizon etc could use some more drivers.

Eric

I agree with the above post, netting 20 cents a mile? If you drive their recommended 500 miles thats $100 and you still need to pay for truck expenses, food, etc.....

Not to mention insurance! If you guys are getting paid to haul you have to pay some kind of commercial insurance... What is that running.

hey I am really interested in pulling some campers, but cant seem to find anybody to fix me up to haul independent. I live in ky but could pick them up anywhere. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been able to reply, been busy hauling FEMA campers.

I pull for Horizon Transport, have been since July 2004.

I currently get $1. 11 or more pulling new units out of Wakarusa, IN, to dealers. Another increase will happen very soon (this week?).

At the present I am dedicated to FEMA units only and therefore do not have to follow hours of service rules. I am free to run as hard as I can.

The factories will be building the new FEMA units for 4 to 6 months. Plus all the dealers that sold inventory to FEMA will have to be restocked. Horizon would like to add another 300 to 400 trucks ASAP! We are swamped as are all transporters.

I have regular pickup truck insurance and I pay $42 per month for bobtail insurance, the company has the freight insurance.

My truck averages 14. 5 mpg between loaded/unloaded. Since I installed a Catcher last weekend I have yet to fill the tank but it appears I am getting better mpg's.

Do I make money? Yes!
