Buying used 5th wheel

Great Pics of Yellowstone

Went to Selma, Al. last Thursday to check on hauling. There are 2 contractors working there. The first 1 laughed at me and said that he had a list of about 150 ahead of me and that he would not sign me. The other contractor contractor, Westgate, told me that they would sign me on, just bring the proof of $25K cargo insurance. Went back Friday night, spent the night in the truck. There were about 300 trucks in line, some had been there for 3 days. We had 4 trucks and went to the contractor at daylight Saturday morning, no one was there. They showed up about 7. They said things had changed and they would not sign any new trucks until Monday. There were several people there with insurance papers in hand as I and some friends. We watched for a while, it is rediculous how slow FEMA is. On Friday, they shipped out about 80 trailers, with several hundred trucks waiting, and thousands of trailers. Westgate had told me on Thursday that they would be shipping 24 hrs. a day but on Friday they shut down at 3 pm. Looks like they are trying to go slow just to prolong their job. One person was trying to call a tv station to try and get them to show the mess. I've never seen so many Fords anywhere, goes to show you that money talks, I guess. They are paying $5 a loaded mile. We were told that the other contractor only paid once a week and did not pay last week. Westgate told me that they would pay by the load, day, or week. I'm going to wait a day or so and go back and see if they will sign me on. Maybe some of them will get tired and go home. It seems that they did real good for the first week or so but now they have more trailers coming in than going out. I guess it's a typical government operation.

Blacksheepdiesel, is Horizon paying your fuel or giving you a fuel tax or is the 1. 11 what you get per mile period?

DHayden,

$1. 11 is the total amount going to the truck of which I think . 28 is fuel surcharge. The new increase will be the first week of October, don't know how much yet.

Checked on fill up today and averaged 16. 3 mpg which was 500 miles unhitched and 300 hitched. I will be real happy if the average is 16 which is a 1. 5 mpg increase since the Catcher was installed.

Trent, are they supplying you with backhauls or are they just interested in getting you back up there to fetch another unit. Buddy of mine and me are thinking of going back and living out of the trucks and a suitcase for a month or two and see what we can make. Going to try and get ahold of V. R. @ Horizon tomorrow. Do they still want you to go full orientation if you just want to do FEMA units? I see they have waived the 3 hitch rule for the next 3 months (6?) even though I have all 3.

Horizon says 1. 60 per mile average on Non-Indiana loads. But what happens in a couple of months when they go back to the hiring freeze that they had pre-Katrina? If i didn't already have a job this would sound good but nothing to quitmy job over unfortunately.

Just returned from Katrina run #2.

You definately can make more money if you can find a dealer to haul for independant.

Seems that alot of the dealer orders are drying up and that Horizon, Quality, and Bennet are getting most of the orders straight from the factories. I have 2 dealers that I am working with that are dealing in small 10-20 unit orders. Pays the $1650 to

Baton Rouge and $1500 to Purvis, and $1. 70/mile at the other dealer.

Talked to Horizon yesterday. I might try their "Driveaway" division to test the waters,

since the still have the "long box" requirement. Not willing to drop the coin for a new

dually just yet. Fuel and expenses does come out of this and you have to pay income tax.

Our company took 3 units to Hammond LA last week

$990 dollar line haul and $217. 80 fuel.

Thats $2. 327 a mile @ 519 miles. Total ticket from Corpus to Hammond was $1351. 35 with insurance.

Currently I am dedicated to FEMA units with Horizon and am not getting backhauls because of log books restrictions since I am strictly FEMA. There are a LOT of backhauls on the non-FEMA side and they just hired another reload dispatcher to procure even more.

The factories are going to build FEMA units for 4 - 6 months. If another hurricane hits that will be prolonged accordingly. THERE IS LOTS OF WORK!!!

Don't know what the hiring/orientation process is, call VR or Tammy and ask.

The 8 foot bed issue wouldn't be an issue if you went strictly FEMA units but I don't know if they will allow it or not. Call VR or Tammy.

More than one driver has told me they are getting $5 - $5. 50 per mile to haul out of the FEMA staging areas. Don't know how many miles they get a day/week.

Trent

DHayden,

That fee is only applied to the factory units out of the Wakarusa yard and is given to the shuttle drivers who pull units from the factories to the terminal.

Horizon's restriction on 6 foot beds is disappointing. I have pulled our 5th Wheel over 23,000 miles without an incidents. Are there any other companies that do not have this restriction?

FEMA and Towing

I work for Bennett and am watching this thread with interest. The agents will hire you and need drivers bad. They try very hard to get you to haul their trailers to dealers (the pay is lower) about $1. 03) because all the drivers are switching over to FEMA (which is not handled thru the local agents) and pays $ 1. 92/mile. Bristol is loaded in the yard with trailers to go to dealers and not enough drivers to handle them. As far as I can find out for now all fema loads pay one way only. The agents are very tight lipped about how to get the better paying loads since they are worried about the dealer deliveries not being made. I am hoping this will put pressure and get us some serious money on loads that should be paying much more. Bristol, Pendleton, and Rialto are not paying as much as hauling directly for fema even when the load is going to fema. Maybe others can fill in some of the gaps I don't know about. R C :(

Bennett pays $1. 92 per mile for FEMA and Horizon is paying $1. 06???? At least that is what is posted on Horizons FEMA area as of today.

Maybe this has been asked but are they paying map miles or ACTUAL miles?

Seems to me there'd be a lot of detours down there.
