Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Pulling engine, can transmission stay?

I'm gonna pull the engine on the 98 12v 2500 I bought at auction the other day. Hopefully it'll only need rings, we'll see.



Question is, do I need to do what the Chilton (I know, buy a factory manual) says and remove the transmission and transfer case, or can I leave them in place and just pull the engine?



I'm thinking pull everything in front of the engine and almost slide it straight out the front without a lot of lifting. I've got a old portacrane with a 3" dia. cylinder that I hope is up to the task. With the front bumper off, I should be able to reach far enough over the engine without extending the yardarm.

transmission will have to go in order to remove and replace motor. transmission isn't that hard to remove if you're already going to take all the measures to pull the motor.

The transmission can stay in place,just use some chain to support it

transmission can stay. Makes it harder but it can be done.

I guess the transmission can stay, but I wouldn't dream of leaving it in while I changed one out. But I'm not by any means a professional either

If it is an auto truck, then I would leave it in (have pulled multiple gas/diesel engines like that). If it is a 5-spd truck I would pull it to keep from possibly dinging up the input shaft if things get to banging around as they sometimes do

I don't have a problem pulling the tranmission if necessary. We just put little Bro's truck back together today after changing the clutch. But if it's not necessary, I'd just as soon save the time and labor. I suspect there's plenty to do just pullin the engine and tearing it down.

I left my 5 speed in the '97 truck when I pulled the engine. I supported it on a cross bar between the body mounts (a piece of tubing held to the brackets with L shaped threaded rods from Home Depot designed to be used in concrete.
