Do I need a new one or can I run with it?

My opinions-

I'd stick with the stock clutch, or go SB. I am NOT impressed with the LuK Pro Gold. I had one in a 92 W250 that I bought thinking a clutch had gone out. Turns out the adaptor from the transmission to t-case had stripped, and I would have to pay a 30% restock fee on a $400 clutch. I put it in, and it wouldnt hold a 14K GCVW load up a 5-6% grade without giving the odor of hot brakes. Didnt have a tach, but I know it was slipping.

Also, while you have it all apart, check the cam plug. It isnt that hard to remove the flywheel adaptor and starter. The plug can make a grand mess if it pukes. Had it happen to me and my 2qt/ oil change became 2 gallons in half that.

If you go with a pilot bearing instead of the bushing, will you have to get the flywheel rebored? The bushing is awful thin for a bearing to fit in the same space.

Getting ready to order some parts. Just looking for an update from those that got the ebay Sachs clutch and see if was working out OK.

Hey Bud, where did you get your rear main seal? Tried to do a search based on given criteria and got 4x4 ATV's. WRONG! Am getting stoked about my own project that has been outlined in this thread. I know how, my body just doesn co-operate like it did 35 years ago=).

Sachs Clutch plate thickness?

While the engine and transmission are out on their way to the other truck, I pulled the transmission to do a preventative rear main seal (84k on the OD). I don't know whether to put a new clutch in at this point or just put the old one back in. The thickness of the clutch plate is ~. 375-. 385 thick. I saw an old post by bgilbert that lists the clutch thickness at . 394 on the 89 manual. Could I only have . 020 wear in 84 k miles? Can anyone verify if . 394 is the thickness for 93 as well? Is that where the new ones actually are? If that is the case, I imagine that this thing will last quite a bit longer. The throwout bearing was not making any noise, but seems pretty loose, is this normal? I am putting in the $20 Quad4x4 pilot bearing.

TIA,

Ken

I've had them with over 200k still look like new (fixing to reinstall one, actually), so it doesnt surprise me that you have so little wear in only 84K.

Cool, Thanks!

I got the flywheel bored out today for the bearing and hope to get this project going the right direction this weekend. So far I have been disassembling everything, two trucks down to the frame. Now comes the test to see if I remember how to put one together. :)

This beats jigsaw puzzles any day. :D
