Advice needed before buying truck

Check this out!

Is there anyone out there that occasionally pulls really heavy with the NV5600 6 spd. ?? I'm talking trailers, goosenecks, car haulers, campers, etc... that weigh at or over 17,000 lbs.

I am looking for input on Water Temps, EGT's, What gear, What speed in that gear, RPM etc..... Assuming winds are calm. Flat interstate travel.

Any input is greatly appreciated... ...

I Dont Pull That Heavy But Truck And Trailer Weigh 23, 200#. To Some That Is Heavy. On Flat Land At 75 In Sixth I See Around 1000 Degrees On The Egt And The Rpms Are At 2200 To 2400. Truck Likes It. I Do Have Some Mods Though. 04. 5 Is The Year

Close to that heavy... . 15,000#

I have a 36' toyhauler 5th wheel.

I have commercial type tires on the truck, 3. 54 gears which with the bigger tires, makes for lower ratio... .

I have the 6 speed, and I climb hills pretty well... usually I downshift to 5th for steep hills, If it very steep, I downshift again and feather the throttle to keep the EGT's out of the top (1000 after turbo)...

at 65-70 my r's are about 1700-1800, I average 11 MPG due to the 19. 5" rims and tires... .

I have the edge EZ and 2nd stage injectors, 4" exhaust, and If I want extra boost on a small hill, I have a 100 hp box I can turn on and off... Still have to watch the EGT's

I tow 14,000 5er with no issues on flat land on hills i keep an eye on my temp if it gets to high i drop down a gear. 3,55 gears 6sp ( I PUTS FORDS AND CHEVYS TO SHAME ON THE HILLS) :-laf :-laf :-laf

Heavy for me is my 34' gooseneck with a total trailer weight of 15-18K

The motor really likes 2,200 RPM for flat crusing (over 70 MPH in 6th. ) and climbs well in 5th while I watch my EGT, keeping them at 1,250°F pre-turbo. My water temps are rarely more than a needle width above or below 200°F.

Flat towing in 6th. gear is never an EGT problem. EGTs depend on how "flat" the road really is. With the Edge EZ on Level 3, it takes a really decent hill for EGT to approach 1,200°F in 6th gear. Cruise at 800°F or less when really heavy is common as long as the RPMs are over 2,000. Don't tow heavy at low RPMs. You will see EGTs go up much higher than really necessary. The motor will run all day at 3,000 RPM if needed and without any harm.

I have a dead stock 2005 DRW 4X2 auto. I have gone back and forth from AZ to NY and to ND with trailers at about #30,000 GCVW. I don't monitor EGT's, engine temp is as above - plus or minus 10 degrees of 200. Fuel mileage varies with wind and grade, but is about 7. 5 at worst up to about 9. 5 on level road at 70 MPH. No worries!

My NV 5600 failed @ 80K miles towing 11K 35% of the time. It is not a cheap overhaul - I would not recommend over loading it. There is probably a good reason why DC went to Getrag in the 3G trucks.

Our 6spd dually tows a 17,000 pound trailer. No problems yet, only when we turn up the tst we see egt gauge pegged @ 1500*

One thing no one has mentioned is brakes if you are going to tow a very heavy trailer get the best brake controller you can. Do not buy a cheap one. I pull a 22,500 pound trailer around town and to me the most important thing is a good brake controller.
