transmission will heat up real good, depending on load and grade. highly recommend to get a transmission temp gauge if you plan to do that often. anything over 200-210 i believe is bad

I use it to get out of an EGT situation but prefer to manually lock out OD after which, the TC will lock up normally. I like this so that the exhaust brake is usable.

Since it's not a different situation than a regular non-lockup transmission it shouldn't hurt anything as long as the temps stay down, but of course you're losing fuel economy. One thing I dislike about the auto is the big RPM change between 3rd and OD, so sometimes using unlocked 4th for an in-between gear is the best you can do.

I have the auto and manual lock but how do you wire the unlock?

You need a three position toggle switch with center off. Connect the trans wire to the center terminal. Connect a ground to an outside terminal. Connect the PCM to the other outside terminal. Mount the switch so that when the lever is up ground is connected to the trans (forced lock), Then center position is forced unlock. Down is normal PCM control.
