Fixing to pull the front cover to check the bolts and dowl pin and pull the head to send to the machine shop to get checked and put in some 60# springs for the 4k GSK kit. Just trying to get my list together of what all I need from Cummins Southwest.

I been using the search button and if I understand right, I need to order the head gasket kit, right? What all comes with that? Just wondering if it comes with the marine gasket... . what other stuff does the kit have? Probably get the . 010+ or . 020+ over gasket depending if the head needs to be shaved.

What do I need to order on the front timing cover besides the gasket? Is there a kit for that too?

Anyone know I should expect to pay for all of that?

I appreciate any info,

JD

JBlackwell,

The head gasket Cummins sells IS the upgraded marine gasket. Just did the headgasket on my friend's '95 and the crosshatch is still intact with 244,000 miles.

I will miss some items that the upper engine gasket kit contains but it will have more gaskets then what you will require. The kit does have the marine gasket, lots of red goopum, valve cover gaskets and valve bolt o-rings, thermostat housing o-ring, intake manifold gasket, injector washers, return line (u-shaped) gaskets and more.

Add a crank seal along with the cover gasket and you are set. If the crank is "cut" from the old seal, Cummins does have a speedi-sleeve.

Cummins also sells a tab. They are aware of dowel pin issues.

Putting the spring in is no big deal and doesn't requite pulling the head. You could probably have it done in just a couple hours.

Peace of Mind. I figured since the truck will be down, might as well pull the head too. It doesn't look like a big deal to pull it. I got everything pulled for the timing cover but the cover itself last night. Took me a hour and fifteen mintues and all I got left on it is zip off the cover bolts and its off. Then will pull the head.

I have a buddy at the machine shop that will check it for cracks and warpage. Also, a guy I know pretty well said when I pull the head and he is not stuck in the middle of some projects, he will clean up the ports and under the valves a bit. Said it will get a few more CFM. He has always wanted to do one. He has a Cummins in his '88 Ford 350 single tire and wants to know how much porting he can do on a 12V head, because if it helps a lot we will pull his and do it. He tows his 20K+ race car trailer across all of the U. S.

But the big reason why I am pulling the head is again, Peace of Mind. :) I won't feel that the truck is reliable until I pull that head and see that everything is alright with my own eyes. Plus I can put on a thicker gasket and pump the boost up a little.
