im currently in the middle of pulling my replacing my vacuum pump and power steering pump. i cant get the vacuum pump to release from the block, i have it unbolted. is there a special way of removing it? does the engine have to be at 12 o'clock? or do i just need a biger crowbar?

Your profile doesn't say if yours is a 4X4. On my 2WD it was easy to get the bolt out of the block, then the bracket came off with the pump. If you have a front differential in the way then you'll have to do it blind I guess.

I just did mine today..... for the SECOND time.

Both times I have done mine I pulled the PS pump off the VacP and left it connected. If you do this then you have unbolted the bracket from the pumps since it is held between the PS pump and the lower, passenger side nut that holds the PS pump to the VacP.

There is also a bracket immediately behind the PS pump that holds one of the throttle linkage springs that will need to come off.

I'm not sure it can but you might also make sure the VacP hasn't dropped down where the timing case is between the pump housing and the gear.

I wonder if it's possible to remove the PS pump as mentioned above, and then leave the vacuum pump in place to swap out the rear vacuum pump seal - or must the vacuum pump be completely removed to do that?

It seems most vacuum pump seal failures are the rear one, and an improved double lip seal is available to correct the many earlier failures, and it might sure speed up seal replacements if the whole vacuum pump didn't have to be removed, as long as there's enough access to work on it in place...

I'm not 100% sure the 99's are like the 2000-2002 models but I have done several vac pump seal repairs for friends around here. It is way easier to remove the system as one from the truck and rebuild it on a bench than trying to get them back together in a truck hanging over the fender like a monkey. I would be afraid of ruining the seal you install with the kit. I can buy the rebuild kits for under 20 bucks and minus the time in the parts washer cleaning the pumps up I can rebuild one of these in less than 15 minutes start to finish with some basic sockets and small hammer. I havent had one complaint yet and mine has held together for the last 105 K since I did it. The kit comes with the new double lip seal Gary mentioned. It is also very hard to get the pumps lined back up when on the truck because of the X shaped gear inside that has lots of room to slide around and you can easily waste an hour trying to get it lined up. I keep an extra pump laying around that is rebuilt and will send any TDR member a rebuilt one if they prepay the shipping both ways and the cost of the rebuild kit and anything up and beyond that for a donation to my time involved. Hope this helps.

God Bless, Chris

Both times I've done mine I left seperated the pumps and left the PS pump hooked up. With the battery out and the intake tube removed the PS pump will rotate right around into the battery tray and you can put them back together with ease and rotate it right back down into place. I can't see where it would be a benefit to leave the VacP on the engine plus you would have the alignment problems Chris was talking about.

You can order the kit from Cummins or any big truck shop. Cummins number is 4089742. the kits I buy are around 9 bucks and then the shop charges me about the same for freight which is ridiculous but then again so is Dodge's fee of 50 bucks for the same kit. Hope this helps! Chris

Chris I would like to buy one of your rebuilt pumps I plan on pulling mine in a few days, I will need to get a quick turn around so I will send it to you next day or 2 days . I want to pay you what you think is a good price for your efforts. I dont want to take advantage of you and im sure you are trying to do the same . give me a price and I will send you the money with the core I send you. I live in SW MI so the freight wont be to bad . The truck is a 98. 5 24v 5 speed. You can email me at -- email address removed --. Thanks Otis
