I have had my truck for about 2 years but have not pulled anything until today. the truck is a stock 1993 drw 350. get360 3. 5 rear. 277k

I had to move a case 310 dozer 8500lbs plus the trailer 4000lbs.

on level ground pulling was fine.

up inclines (not hills) moved down to forth.

hills down to third.

note in upstate NY these hills are nothing like out west or even PA. I wanted to pull my backhoe (anther 4k) but don't think this truck can do it.

So what should I expect from a stock truck? I have done some reading here before I purchased the truck and was under the impression pulling loads under 20k would be no problem.

motor runs fine some smoke on start up, but clears up, get 21mpg over the road, but looks like pulling has dropped mpg by 1/2.

so if I am looking to pull 20k, should I move to a second gen?

Power

GM You need to look on this site for info on tweeking your pump and moving your timing. Its all fairly easy to do and will make a MAJOR IMPROVMENT in power. Thanks Steve B.

Hi GM,the fuel mileage dropping to about 1/2 is what I found on my truck. Where in upstate are you? Maybe we can get together and I can help you turn your pump up a little. A little turn will make a noticable difference, but fuel mileage will drop some. My trailer weighs 4500# and I moved a JD 4020,about 11000# when my truck was stock, not impressed. I'd like to try it now, I know my truck runs stronger. PM me and let me know, gotta keep up the first gen horsepower ratings :-laf

GMichaels, all early "stock" Cummins powered trucks were a little on the weak side, untill the first "HO's" come out. However with free pump adjustments, you can gain an easy 50hp/100lbs torque and with a #16 turbo housing w/mild performance injectors this power will double. At this power level the factory air filter and exhaust is fine. With the load you just pulled, you will gain one gear on all the hills, fuel mileage will drop some but not much. With any engine mods, you will need boost and pyro guages. The first Gen. motor is very capable and reliable with the mods mentioned and will put a smile on your face. As far as towing 20,000 lbs, plus the weight of the truck, the 2nd Gen will not help.
