I think I have a bad pully bearing but I'm not sure which one. I'm getting a low squeal from the front of the engine. My thinking is it might be the belt tensioner because the belt wonders side to side a little when the engine is running. I'll loosen the belt after work tonight and see if I can find it.

If it is the tensioner are these auto part store items or cummins/dealer only?

Jay (hoping it is something easy (cheap) to fix ;) )

Practical Solutions makes a heavy duty steel with sealed bearing replacement idler pulley. It's wider too. They used to be in the links. Helluva a better piece. I think the *%^# ing dealer only sells the whole assembly and about 3 years ago that was $175!

Jay, take a look at this recent post. (AutoZone for $55).

Sounds like the tensioner. If its just the pulley I think that can be purchased/changed by itself cheaply. If the tensioner is worn its a little tricky to see. My belt was rubbing on the tensioner arm. When I (carefully) pried it forward with the engine running the squeel stopped and I could see the play in the arm.

Anyway, it was easy to change:)

Bruce

PS: My $125 tensioner was from CarQuest. Parts America had one for $90 but I found out it was a rebuilt.

tensioner

shoot some wd40 in the center of the pulley then run it if the noise stops it's the bearing. try not to get it on the belt or outside of the pulley.

Before you get ahead of your self, get some belt dressing and spray the belt down. This year I could have sworn that one of the pulleys was failing. It sounded like a metallic squeak. I had priced the pulleys and was getting ready to spend $80+ to fix it when I decided to spray some belt dressing on the belt just to make sure. It was immediately silent. I was ammazed that it was making the noise that it was because of a failing belt. New $25 belt and smooth sailing.

Good luck,

Dan
