big Don here. I apologize for being out of my usual forum (first gen), but I have a question. I am working on a 1985 crewcab and just bought a totalled 95 Dodge. It has an auto and I am wanting to use the engine, but I am not sure what the diff is between the 160 hp engine and the 215(1997-1998). I want to juice it up to @400hp in the future, but for now will install it as is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

c'mon guys, help me out here. I know some of you inline pump guys know all the ins and outs of these things, so what is the difference??? what do I need to get this engine to put out 400 hp and be able to tow with it???

if i recall what i talked to piers about, it was something to do with internal timming advance?

he told me but i'm havin a brain cramp.

Somewhere in this forum (archives) or TDR magizine lies the answer. But I will try a basic answer.



The difference I believe is that they extended the afc housing for more rack travel between the 215 and 180 ,160. At this time Cummins did not believe that a plate with a different curve could change fuel volume.

So the pump is tweeked inside known as calibrating. (beside extending rack travel).



How to get ot 400 hp?

You should have no problem finding a plate to increase horses/torque. They start I think at 235 hp go to 350 hp . ( Remember gauges first modification)

Bigger injectors ( 215,370 marine,375 marine and others)

Less restricted air intake system.

Less restricted exhaust system.

Turning up High idle screw or new springs in afc housing (govenor).

New adjustable turbo elbow to increase max boost (wastegate) or turbo housing with no wastegate.



Check out signatures of the bombers to see what they did to get the horses they have achieved.

I beleive the 160 HP pump is at a big disadvantage. I think it is actually different on the internals. The biggest plate made for it is a 255/650. Checkout Diesel Page to see the TST chart.



If I recall correctly (this sometimes hurts my head) the 180 and 215 pumps can be used with the 370 injectors. The 215 needs no mods and the 180 needs delivery valves to use them. The 160 is hopeless for these injectors but can use the 215's. I believe the mounting for the 160 and 215 are the same, so you can put a "warm" pump on it with out any trouble.

160 hp pump

Different cam (timing), 12mm barrel plungers vs 13mm on 215 hp pump. Single Helix on plungers vs double on 215 hp pump. I can't think of nothing else. You can make the squirt fuel. Just need to do some investigating. #0 plate, 370's, and . 191 DV's will put you all over the 400 mark. There is plenty of HP there to be made.
 
The 215 needs no mods and the 180 needs delivery valves to use them.



Both use 181 DV's



The 160 is hopeless for these injectors but can use the 215's.



The 160 pumps will usually need 191 DV to make the 370's work at the best.

Agreed..... and I would like to have one too if it's lying around.



13mm plungers are aftermarket only the 215 pumps have 12mm plungers



I think all pump have 12mm's (I know none have 13's factory) the 215 pumps do have the different 12mm's. There is a different world when going from 12mm to 13mm.
