... so I'm changing out the front main seal, and I notice... hopefully not to my detriment... that the pump gear has a bit of in-out 'play', no more than a 1/16", but certainly there.

I've recently rebuilt the pump, there were no left over parts, it runs perfectly, everything is nice and tight, no leaks anywhere... but there's this little bit of... I guess I'd call it end play.

I checked another engine I have and there is also a bit of end play but not as much as there is with this one.

So, should there be any? Does it matter? Has anyone come across this before?

Appreciate any thoughts.

upon further troubleshooting... uhhhhhh I still found nothing out of the ordinary. I just pulled off the pump gear, checked it all out, no problems noted, and bolted it back up to the factory 48 lbs torque, and the play is the same. The play is in the pump, nothing to do with the gear itself. There is no thrust washer or anything - the gear sits mid-taper on the pump shaft, so the play has to be inside the poump itself..... and it runs perfectly.

So... . ummm I guess I'm gonna run it as-is until it gives me a reason to do something about it. I dunno... {noclue}

Pretty sure there is a spec for end play on the pump shaft. Not sure what it is or how too much effects the pump. Need to consult the VE Bible to figure that one out. :)

. . there definitely is, however I talked with "NASCAR Mark" - a. k. a. Mark Wilson, PDR Head tech - and he pretty much agreed with me that so long as the end play isn't a 'lot', like 1/8 - 1/4-inch... and so lolng as it continues to run normally... ... . 'drive on'.

The truck continues to run great - no issues - so,..... I'm a'gonna 'drive on' :)
