Equalizer link question

I went out to start the generator to let it dry out and it not would run. It's in the fiver and is a Onan 5500 Marquis. I pulled the hose to the filter and it was dry. Now I have taken the fuel pump off and need to know how do I check it? I hooked it up to the battery in my truck but it doesn't pump. Should it run with power to the red lead? Ground is connected to battery ground. I was planning a trip fri. but this may stop it. I called Northern Tool and they said "pump what"? Lots a help. Today being Sun. there is nobody open with the Onan. Tommorow being Laber Day probably not and then either.

Any ideas?

I am guessing that you may have to also hook a groung directly to the pump as well... ... ... ..... good luck, Kevin

I got the pumped hooked to battery and when it runs it makes a knocking sound. I expected sort of a whizz sound. It's just a low volumn, electric gasoline pump, down line of the filter. A pusher pump. It has an Onan # but I know there is a replacment out there somewhere. If I can't get it fixed I won't be able to go to the drags this weekend in Commerce. That generator is the wife's hair dryer. And that's the truth. .

Pump

The pump is the pulsating type, if it doesn't work, try your local auto parts store, they should have something that will work. bg

Are you shure you do not have an obstuction in the tank ot fuel line preventing the gas from geting to the pump??????

You can rig just about any low pressure electric pump to work. Rubber fuel line to steel line or even get generic filter to go inline. That onan filter is very very very small. I have replaced that little bugger with a regular inline auto filter.

Good luck

Okay:

I found a pump at AutoZone. $28. Got it on and now I think the plug is fouled. Plenty of gasoline now. I never have been very good at small engine repair. I guess I'll learn now!:D

preston

pull the plug and lite a match to clear the combustion chamber of raw fuel, make sure you have no leaks on the carb or tank  , atleast pull the plug and turn it over a few times , clean the plug and it should go :)

No luck:

The engine acts like it is not gettin spark. It is really pumping fuel now, though. I pull a plug , put the wire back on it and turned the engine over. Plenty of fire. I got it to start once after I installed the new pump and it ran for about 10 seconds. Shut itself down and that has been it. I feel like something electrical has it shut down. I guess i'll have to take it back to the dealer I bought it from.

Gen set

On the older models, the ignition points are on the top of the engine just to the right and down by the carburetor. They are bad about glazing over if the generator has not run for awhile. Some units also have a low oil pressure shutdown? bg

Possibility that the fuel pump has to much pressure for the little carb ( needle valve ) and is flooding the engine.

Tues I took the fiver down to Byran, Ga. to the dealer where I bought the gen. I left it over nite. As soon as I unhooked the trailer from the truck they moved it into a bay. Dodge dealers should watch that in action. Wed morning the tech put it on the code reader and guess what, nothing wrong. Man! The service Manager thought the choke was not working correctly so I think they did some tweeking on the automatic choke. He also liked the way I installed the new pump. I moved the location. So now I have it back home and am going to the drag races fri in Commerce, Georgia to see what the towing machine will run. Kinda crazy. Tow a 13K fiver to the track and then race the towing machine. I always have seen other drag "stars" tow the drag machine on a trailer. Not the racer tow the trailer. Oh well .

Talk to ya later and thanks for all the advice. I prolly need to check on the pump pressure.
