Hi,

I have my injector pump in the shop and the pump guy says I have to have my engine at TDC when I reinstall my pump. . So I clocked the crank clockwise till the TDC pin hole lines up but the key slot on the pump gear is at about 6:30-7:00 (looking at it from the front of the engine). . Is that about right?. . I thought the pump guy said it should be straight down. . Can anyone help?. . I'd hate to have to take the pump off again. . That's NO fun... . Thanks for looking... ..... Chuck

Don't know about the keyway position but make sure you have him tell you how to remove the locking pin if you are going to install it yourself. He will lock the pump shaft in place when he sets the pump up and thats why he said you need to set the engine at TDC. I have not done this but watched the pump shop when they did mine. If I'm wrong about this, someone please step in and set it straight!:)

They also had to reset my TDC pin, it was off 2. 5 degrees.

Going by the shop manual you are suppose to put the engine at TDC prior to removing the pump and also lock the shaft. I have seen on here were people just yank them out but I don't know how they set the timing up after that. The guy will set the pump for TDC and as long as your engine is at TDC and the keyway slot lines up I would be comfortable with that.

I asked the pump shop about the same thing when I had mine rebuilt. Since the pump shaft and the pump gear are keyed, there is no need at all to use the locking pin on the pump or to have the engine at TDC #1 compression stroke. It's either lined up or it's not. Just be careful to not drop that pesky little key into the gear cover or jump the gear teeth  To make sure the key didn't fall out, I put a little ding in each side of it with a punch and lightly tapped it into the pump shaft. Now, if the pump shaft is not locked with the pin, it will want to rotate to the low point of the cam plate. You will have to turn the engine over carefully (making sure the gear teeth stay meshed) to line up the gear keyway with the pump shaft key. Should slip right on. Then, to be most accurate, you should set the timing with a dial indicator.

Here's my pump R&R thread. (One note to add..... the oil fill tube top is removable so you don't have to remove the fan pulley block to unscrew it. Ah well  :D )

Oh, and I know it was mentioned before, but PULL OUT THE TDC PIN AND PUMP SHAFT LOCK PIN BEFORE YOU TURN THE ENGINE OVER  Oo.

I have done a few pump R&Rs in my time. The key slot in the gear is at about 6:30-7:00 with teh engine at #1 TDC. WHat I did was just get the pump on, and get the key in the slot, put the 3 nuts on loosely, and realigned the marks on the pump flange and the housing. (there ARE marks, arent there?). Tighten the nuts, and you're almost ready to go. There should be a washer of a sort that kind of resembles an arrowhead that you slide under the bolt ot lock the pump. THe washer keeps it far enough out thta the lock wont interfere with pump movement. Mine have been wired to the pump when I got it back; just loosen the head(10mm) and slip the washer under it when you get to that point. Another option if the pump key and gear slot dont line up is to unlock th epump and turn it the direction you need to go. Turns pretty easy, but it kind of snaps as the rollers go over the cam plate, so watch of that. If you have any questions on my explanation, feel free to PM me or email at -- email address removed --

pump timing

one thing I did was (with the timing pin in the gear, I put a piece of tape accross the damper lining up with the edge of the engine sensor. Later I rotated the damper, shot some light paint on it and removed the tape (or scribe a line) now I can see top center by just lining this back up instead of messing with the pin.
