Ok, maybe I am beating a dead horse, but I just can't seem to get it straight.

Some people might know member BRANDON, well he REALLY knows his stuff and he lives real close to me. So naturally I bounced some ideas off of him. He was adamant about the need for getting the p-pump modded, basically I got the impression that this was one of the best and most effective mods... .



So I checked around and a place called AFI (Associated Fuel Injection) in Modesto agreed and said if I pulled the pump, they would bench it for about $150. Seemed like a really good deal.



I value all the experience and advise given on this site, but I hear more about injectors, plates, DV's, GSK's, than I do about getting the pump modded?

If this is such a great BOMB, why isn't everyone doing it and raving about it? :confused: :confused:



Lastly, what can I do on the pump if and when I take it off that will really roll the smoke? :-laf I am not the best wrench, but I've never attempted something I could not finish. Should I just buy the book about p pumps and go from there?

The P-pump is a very sensitive machine relative to adjustments and mods. Only a trained/experienced pump mechanic should mess with them. We can do governor lever adjustments, AFC mods, GSKs, DVs, and plates, but that's about it. A tiny little little change to other parts can mess up the whole thing. So leave it to the experts. Also, not a lot of Bosch pump shops will hop them up. I've heard that in order to keep in good graces with Bosch, they can only set them to factory spec. Uprates are a no-no. So you have to find shops that will do that and know what they are doing.



I think that's why not alot is done to them besides just replacing them with a "race" version. It costs a lot to have the specialists work them over. Plus its not quite as easy as replacing injectors, turbos, etc. to R & R the pump. It's not too bad once you've done it a time or two, but they're heavy and you have to take it to someone after its out to have it worked over, so down time is longer.



However, when a competent mechanic does work them over, the results can be huge! I'm hoping to have a little tweaking done to mine down the road.

Great question because I have had it my self:) Good answer. But any other clarifications about particular aspects will egerly be read. I am about to take the dive and start playing around with it; Or have specific things done to it. Just what,--- is the thing I am learning as I read the board. Thanks to all.
 
One thing that can be done is have them bench tuned. The factory adjusts the output of each barrel to be within a specific tolerance relative to the barrels. Sometimes they can be out a bit. Getting them closer to each other helps. Also, the tech can bump up the output a little by loosening the nuts at the base of each DV holder and turning the barrel(?) just a tad. But it needs to be on a test machine to do this 'cuz a tiny tap can make a big difference.



I've heard there's a guy in SLC that makes a few adjustments and/or replaces a small part or two that can get the 215 pumps to flow a lot more fuel for a reasonable cost (couple hundred?). That's what I intend to check into once I get the air & exhaust flow turned way up.

Thanks for all the advise, I really appreciate it and I think I am going to get it done. I'll take it out, but let AFI tweak it. I talked to them and they build pumps for alot of pull trukcs, so they know whats up. anyway, about 200 bucks is what I am figuring and thats cheaper than injectors!

Do the transmission first... Garmon did timing, 4,000 GSK, removed the plate, and installed a K&N on my truck. . Night and day difference in power, though the torque converter started shuddering so bad it was shaking my dash... That was immediately after he did the work. .

Trust me. . transmission first. .
