How do you "lock" the pump timing to remove it? I'm removing my pump (see "Remember me, help engine stalling") Any other removal and installation tips would be greatly appreciated. Merry Christmas!

Just turn the engine to #1 TDC and do the removal. Once the pump is out, you can loosen off the fitting where the plastic lock is located and use the timing gear nut to turn the pump clockwise while watching in the hole for the pump to come in to where you can insert the lock and then insert it with the v cut facing in and tighten down the fitting just snug. You'll have to remove it when the new pump comes as well and turn the lock 180 with the v cut facing out and then snug back down the fitting.

Back to the top. I'm stuck until I figure this out. Do I have to lock it for removal? Does this aid the pump rebuilders? I'm not in a rush, but I'd like to get this done before new pump arrives. Thanks for the advice DieselB59!

I am no expert here, but
If you are replacing the pump, what differece does it make on the old one? you will need to time the new one. There is a locking device on the pump but if you dont intend to reuse is why worry about it?

Jason... relax, just put the engine to TDC & pull the pump. The new one will arrive already timed & with instructions on how to remove the lock pin when the time comes.
Have a merry Christmas all #ad

Sixkill, I don't know if this would apply to your truck, but the 1st Gens are a lot easier to remove the injection pump and to get the timing pin inserted if you take the two bolts out of the vacum/power steering pump flange @ the front cover and move the assembly about 5" to the rear. Makes things much easier & only takes about 10 minutes extra to do(probably 4 minutes the second time). The attached hoses on the old ones are long enough to allow this. Hope this tip
applies to your newer truck.
