Larry,
My guess is that you're just not pinching the fuel line connector in the right spots. There are only two small raised "ears" on opposite sides of an inner retainer that must pressed in. This retainer STAYS ON THE NIPPLE at the fuel tank module. The ears could be in any orientation (sides or top/bottom). It doesn't take a lot of force when you get them squeezed in just right, and then the outer connector attached to the fuel line will slip off relatively easy with the inner retainer staying behind. I hope that all makes sense.
I had a lot of difficulty in disconnecting the fuel line when dropping my tank for the first time, but once I understood how it worked, I could remove or install the connector in a second. As a matter of fact, it went on and off so easily that I was amazed it doesn't leak or suck air!
Take a look at the attached picture... I think this is exactly what the connector looked like (going from memory). The ears marked "1" are part of the inner retainer you pinch and it DOES NOT slide off the nipple. The outer part marked "2" is what moves to the right in this picture as you pinch the retainer ears.
Once you finally manage to get it off, you'll laugh (or cry) at how simple it was.
