Two years after killing my KDP, I noticed tonite that I have a leaky crank seal. Does the timing cover need to be removed to do the pump timing? If it does, I'll just wait until I get someone to set my timing before replacing the seal.

Howdy Chris,

The cover doesn't need removed. Just the Oil Fill Tube. That is where you get access to the gear for adjustment.

What?? This needs to be to be discussed further.

Bloomy's right. The oil fill tube screws into a flange that screws into the timing cover. Both need to be removed to access the nut on the timing gear.

Timeing

I know that the oil filler neck needs to be removed, but the statement that the timeing case cover does not need to be removed is counter to everything I have read on here for the last four years.

The gear isn't removed from the engine to change the timing. It is only loosened from the shaft. There is a special puller to loosen the gear.

I used a harmonic balancer puller to pull mine. If the threaded shaft had been 1/2" longer it would have hit the radiator though. I got lucky. This is on a Ford conversion. Dodges may have more or less room. It would not be difficult to fabricate a puller if you're the do-it-yourself type.

If you are going to set the timing

If you are going to set the timing, I'd just wait till then to do the front seal. Taking the fan, fan pulley mount and fan shroud off and out of the way makes loosening the nut and setting the timing just that much easier.

Also while the cover is off you can loctite and tighten all the bolts under the front cover that can come loose and do the same type of damage that the infamous dowel pin can.

If you have the front cover off, then it is very easy to clean the pump shaft and the gear's tapered mating surfaces so the timing wont slip. Get a new wave washer for the pump nut too, often the old one is cracked or in two pieces. They're just a few bucks from Piers.

Just setting the timing only requires unscrewing the oil filler to access the pump gear nut, and put a puller on the gear to pull it off the tapered shaft. Cleaning the taper requires using a can of brake cleaner with the plastic spray tube and trying your best to wash all the oil out of the gap that you can't see. Having the gear in your hand makes this much easier.

Hope this helps Greg L.

Ok, thanks for the info. I was going to make a trip to Duncansville to see if I could get Tom Lindsay to set my timing for me. (and maybe talk him into doing a few tweaks to the old girl) I cant do it myself, dont have the right tools, so thats why I was asking about the cover, I will probably wait and do it all at once, but didnt really want to pay a shop all the extra of the fan and cover removal to do the seal. I figured that just the oil fill needed to come off from what I saw when I tabbed my pin.

Merry Christmas from work.
