Okay, I'm sure everyone is familiar with the timing pin on the side of the injection pump. You take that cap off, pull the little plastic pin out, flip it end for end, and stick it back in the hole, then bar the engine over until it engages the little "tab. "

So, does anyone know exactly what the pump is set at when the pin is engaged? For example, we all know the little pin in the timing cover sets the engine at TDC on #1 when engaged, but where is the pump set when the little pin in the side of the pump is engaged? Is the pump at TDC for the #1 delivery valve? Or is it the start of injection for the #1 delivery valve? Or is it a specified number of degrees advanced, so that at the factory all they have to do is line that pin up, and line the pin up in the pump, and then bolt the pump in and the gear on?

Can't the pump be timed using this pin?

Thanks for the replies. Oo.

This is a lock down pin. If you look closely the pin can slide up and down if you loosen two bolts. So you need to use the mm of lift on the chart, figure out what timing you want, then you can lock it down with this pin during the install.

that pin is there so you can pin the engine and pin the pump and put it together if you want stock timing. so yes you can time the pump to stock specs with that pin.

The ones I have played with the lock down can be moved up and down. If someone has moved it then you won't have stock timing.

Thanks for the replies, I wasn't sure.

So basically, if no one's messed with it, if you put the engine at top dead center, and pin the pump, it should be set at the stock setting? (14* btdc in my case i think. )

Is there a cheap place to get the dv socket? Can't I use a regular dial indicator with a magnetic base and position it to read the lobe? (Once I remove the DV. ) Is it mandatory to replace the copper washer?

Thanks. :)
