Not sure about the cost, but unless you konw someone there, they will only set the timing to factory specs. They will not bump it up to 16*.

Unless you think it might have slipped, I wouldn't bother.

I got my timing bumped up to 15. 4 while it was still under warranty a few years ago. It was done by a Cummins tech who really knew his stuff and liked working on them. Of course his diagnosis was "loss of power" and did it to the "maximum factory specs" ;) . Like I said it was done under warranty but the workorder stated something like $139. 00 not charged for the job. I guess I just got kinda lucky.

A friend recently got a '96 and I was checking into some stuff for him and called a shop about setting the timing and doing a "tune-up. " They quoted me like $700-$900 to set the timing and said the pump should be removed and set on the bench, and in addition to timing, balance output between the cylinders and so forth. Then once that is done reinstall the pump and set timing between timing and engine. Was I being fed a line due to my lack of 12-valve knowledge? Is there any merit to removing the pump and having it "tuned up" on a bench?

They also mentioned a GSK wasn't necessary 'cause they can tweak the pump to fuel just as well up to 3K RPM and that the engine will run and idle smoother. Fact or Fiction?

I am going to let him know about the timing kit from Snap-on.

There is no substitute for a gsk weather it is a 3kgsk or a 4kgsk, money that is well spent, you won't believe the difference this makes. Oo.

It depends on how serious you are whether you need to remove the pump or not.

For 99. 9 % of us - if your engine is running fine - do not remove the pump. Just work with it on the engine.

Now if you are a REALLY SERIOUS racer or in the quest for the maximum amount of power - aka John Force, Joe G. , Joseph Donnelly etc and want to get the maximum from the engine - then yes, cylinder balance starts to become more critical.

No, certainly not looking for lear jet performance, just enhancing transportation between Point A & B :)

How well does the snap-on kit work? How true and precise can the timing be set with it? There's a few guys in my area with 12-valves and we're having a Bomb Party next weekend and thought about doing some timing jobs.

Going to search this forum to see if anyone has posted a step-by-step of setting timing unless anyone knows a good place to look or could post it here.

Check the link above that lucas547 posted.

I posted that right after I did mine.

I have the snap-on kit and it worked just fine. I just hated to spend so much for a metric dial indicator - oh well.

The accuracy depends on how precise you are - you can get it real close - just take your time. By the time I was done (with the TDC marked on the balancer) I could reset the timing in about 30 min). - not including cleaning up or getting out the tools.

Even if the pump is removed and balanced the $700-$800 us way too much. Most pump shops will remove balance, reinstall and do the timing for $400 - $500 around So. Cal. Timing only is $80. 00 - $100. 00.

What shop will do that for that price down here in southern California?

I had my pump timing bumped to 15. 5* at my local dealer. Some dealerships that I called wouldn't do it, others said yes. They charged me 2 1/2 hours. I just had to give them the plunger lift specs I wanted them to set it to.
