Well I finally found a shop in my area that does pump timing and gave them a call and talked to the owner he sounder VERY knowledgable and very easy to talk to, he said they set the timing to 15*-16* depending on who drives the truck the most, me #ad
,so he would probably go to 16*. I will have to make an appointment with him in the very near future to get this done and will let you all know how much it was off and the results. I am hoping the results will be as noticeable as when I put the #11 plate in.

14. 5°seems to be the best general timing number. You will get more power with 16°,but it may make the engine harder to start.

More hp: yup. Better mileage: uh huh. Higher egt's: ABSOLUTELY. Be sure you know where you're going with this.
I've never heard of a pump shop reccomending you advance it to 16 degrees. Every reccomendation I've ever heard says keep it in the 14's.
No one out there knows more about this than Ted Jannetty. Why not e-mail or give him a call and discuss it with him.

Joe D. Advised me that if a governer spring kit is in your future to advance the timing more. He adjusted mine to 16 Deg. As far as starting goes it starts better and the EGT seem alittle lower not higher. My milage is up about 3/4 miles to the gallon.
I would also talk to Joe he's the man on the 12 valves now that Piers has gone over to the dark side... . LOL

Yes I did also talk to Joe D. and he suggested 15-15. 5 also I had mentioned those numbers to this shop and he said that they go on the lower side, 15* if you have differant people driving the truck who do not know how to control themselves and the truck but seeing as how I was mainly the only driver, that he could put it to 16* or were ever I wanted it. So everybody speak up and let me know what you have put yours too and the pro's and con's of it.

Mine is at 16 and I don't notice any adverse effects at all EGT maybe slighty lower power hard to tell by seat of the pants.

I talked with a gentelman today at a performance diesel shop, who recommended 16. 5 with 300 injectors and delivery valves.

Is he out to lunch? He seemed very knowledgeable. He did make mention of the EGT's likely being a concern with that setup.

Comments?

I talked to a vendor the other day that told me that I should be at 17. 0 - 17. 5 degrees with my set up. I am currently at 15. 5. I wonder if anyone has messed with different timing settings with a hot truck on a dyno or has seat-of-the-pants experience?

Anyone have any more to add to the timing question?

Higher timing will:
1. Lower EGT's
2. Maybe give better milage
3. Give more HP
4. Make higher cylinder temps.
Once you get too high, pistons will start to erode. I'm above the 20 degree range but I am forseeing high temp marine pistons in my future. #ad

BigYellowIron,

I thought I had responded back on this thread that I had gotten my timing advanced already but thanks for the offer. As for the timing it was advanced to 15* and I have noticed a little lower egt's with about the same fuel mileage and I also noticed that I seem to have lost some low end and was also wondering if this is normal but it does pull stonger once boost comes up and the rpm hits around 1500-1600 rpm
