You could if you had a timing kit, but you'll have to check it with the dial indicator after installing it anyway. More than likely it will shift when torquing down the pump shaft nut (it usually takes 2-4 attemps of torquing down the nut then having to pull the gear again to get the timing where I want it).



If you don't have a timing kit, best you keep the pump pinned and reinstall at stock timing. After mounting the pump install the nut, go a little past finger tight, then pull the pin and torque it down. Chances are it will shift a bit but not enough to advance it too far. Later when you have a timing kit or someone to help you then reset it to where you want it.



If I were you since you went through the trouble of removing the pump you should send it to a good shop for a "tune up. " I think it's worth the 2-$400 to balance all cylinders and do a number of other adjustments, and they could advance it for you so that when it's in the pinned position it will be the timing you want when you engine is at TDC.
