I set my pump timming today upto 15. 5* it was at 12. 5 before. The shop that worked on my pump when they reinstalled my pump they must not of cleaned the oil off of the shaft coming out of the pump, because when i put the gear puller on the gear and turned the puller bolt it slid right off of the shaft, no loud pop or anything. You gotta watch them guys!!!

How do you set timing?

My only local deisel shop says they can advance the timing but, there are no degree marks to set to a specific point. Do you use some type of pinwheel or gauge?

Thanks

Jeff

WOW

I did my timing today and advanced it to 16 and what a difference. The truck came alive again. The power is alot better and the mpgs are great. It was about 200 mile trip to get it done and I got 23 MPGs the whole trip. Before I was getting about 18 on the highway. I got almost 100 more miles out of this tank. On the way down i kept the truck at about 1700 to 1800 rpms. On the way back I could not keep my foot out of it, and I still got great MPGS. I even smoked a 1/2 ton dodge up a large hill. I blew alot of coals.

I would definately do this to any 12 valver.

97 2500 4x4 Straight piped, timing@16*, Autometer guages go in tomorrow, and KDP Killed. This list just keeps growing

Do you know anyone in Southern CA that will advance the timing? My local shop says that its not possible to set the timing to any thing other than the factory setting. They're not too excited about changing anything from stock!!

Does anyones truck pull a trailer better with the timing advaced. my truck seems to be a little weak when pulling a trailer.

I will be towing my horse trailer soon and will let you know. With the extra I got I think it would be easier. Does anyone know why it makes them have more of a nastier cold start, and why they put out so much more white/blue smoke? Went out to start my truck after work today and it was very hard to start. It was about 28-30* out. I can not plug it in at work. I will take the cold startups for what I got out of advancing it.

Thanks

Try leaning on the fuel pedal ever so slightly when you crank it over and see if that helps it any. Advancing my timing did not change anything with starting the truck. But, after I added the 191's and the DD 3's I've had to slightly depress the fuel pedal at start-up. Not sure why, but it hasn't caused any problems or worries. My idle is still a bit too low (600 - 650) and increasing it to about 800 rmp's should help. If you're idle is below 800 rpms, you should consider increasing it so that it is. This should help some as well. I've just been too busy to crawl under the truck and bump it up a bit...
