wanting to hook up the wire from my comp box, 2 questions though, which wire? direstions are a little hard to read. and do i run a chance of ruining the vp44? what % do i have that it will survive? it has 97,000 mi on the stock pump, that has never been changed.

i can't tell you which wire it is but i can tell you that having a 99, you run a better chance of your vp going out then say someone with a 2000. hate to say it but that's what i have read and heard.

Tap the wire, is'nt that what you bought the box for. I have not heard of to many going out any more with or without the wire tapped. Good luck.

Cant find my directions off hand, I'm sure someone will come up with the answer, its not to hard just take your time.

I did it after the same worries and hesitation that you have. (Only I have a Blue Chip). I tapped it and never turned it on, then 10%, then 20%, only for a little bit, then on full at the end, took me about two weeks to get the guts up, even called a place that sold reman VPs, got some prices, just in case. I did it and am very happy I did! No problems on my 99 either.

If and when you tap the wire the best way to do it is a soldered connection. I tapped mine using the scotch lock connector and after a few months started setting VP44 related codes and some minor stumbling. The codes would clear themselves and then do it again maybe weeks later. This problem got more consistant to where I had codes and stumbling all the time. Everyone on here said VP44 is going out. One guy said he had the same problem and to solder the pump wire tap. I took off the scotch lock and saw that the wire going to the pump is made up of about 5 or 6 strands of wire twisted together, 2 of these had been cut in half by the scotch lock. Anyhow I soldered my connection and have not had a problem since. The acceleration is strong and smooth.

Moral of the story is, those scotch lock connectors or a very poor choice of making a connection.

i just dont have the $$$ to replace if it goes south... but i am really wanting to hook the wire up!! it just doesnt produce enough smoke on 1/5 for me.

It's you play you pay one way or another. It's a real crap shoot when you hook it up. There are things you can do to keep it good though after you tap it. A good example it getting rid of those banjo bolts.

Run a good fuel lube before and after. Run it easy at first. I doubt that you will have a problem since it has a few miles on it. Pump is worn in. Also MAKE sure you have good fuel pressure. 10 lbs Minimun at load.

What does "tapping the wire" do?

Are we increasing voltage to the MAP for more fuel?

Are we reading a signal from the VP?

Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Tapping the wire adds 30 or so more HP. What it does is holds the selinod (sp) open longer and get more fuel in the injector

What Bomber said. It takes over the input from the ECM to the VP and like he said, controls the fuel solenoid to increase the amount of fuel going into the lines.

The MAP sensor is of course fooled by a boost fooler which is the same as the fuel solenoid, meaning it fools the ECM, but into thinking the boost is still within safe operating parameters. This of course prevents defueling because of overboosting. I think its above 22 when it defuels, and while the ECM may see a pegged 22 you could be actually making 35 or 40 or like some guys, 50-60 (OR MORE!)

I put my comp on about 3 weeks ago. I went to Moab this past week and on the way back it went out. I can still drive it but it cuts out at light throttle.

I ordered the race VP from ATS and should be in next week I hope. This pump is can handle the changes from tapping the pump wire and will also add power.

As I had found out after I hooked mine up, just be prepared to replace it. But like other guys have said, it doesn't happen a lot.

The VP 44 goes out more on the 98 and 99 because they are just weaker pumps.
