looks like another duramax...

Local farmer retiring and sold me his 1977 John Deere 4430 for 13000. Goes really well with the old 4020. I think I'm really going to enjoy that A/C in the hay fields this summer. Any of you guys got any opinions or suggestions about this tractor?

Big green rocks. At least you do'nt have to worry about this company getting bought out and you having an orphan tractor. Just remember to test anti-freeze for [PCA content I think] . Dealers have test strips for this.

4430 have weak rear ends. If your just going to make hay or do light work it should be just find. They just like to pop when you pull the crap out of them. alonzo

I understood that the early models had problematic rear ends but they fix it in the later models by using the 4440 rear end. At least i hope this is so!

that is exactly true and usually if somebody has a problem with one that is what they do. Do you know if you got a later one? Hopefully, but still if your not going to pull it hard I doubt you'll have much trouble at all. alonzo

ok now I see the 1977, I'm not sure on the years it affects but I do believe that is a later one.

sounds like your all set then. I think this one of JD's few problem, and they were quick to fix it. We run all green paint, because of what my dad says "Where you need a 1/2" bolt, Case uses a 7/16" and JD used a 9/16" bolt. "
