Amperage Draw

I don't know which pusher pump you are installing, but mine draws about 10 amps. If you just spliced into the power wire for the factory lift pump, then that skinny little wire would be trying to carry the amperage for both pumps, and would get hot amd maybe melt it's insulation, probably ruining your wiring harness.

I tapped the supply wire to the factory lift pump, and used this to control the relay that supplies the current to my pusher pump. It's actually real easy. The hardest part was getting to the lift pump wire to tap it. The current draw for the control of the relay is very low, probalby only 1/10th of an amp.

It all depends on what exactly you're doing 777. If you are putting a pusher pump back by the tank in addition to the stock lift pump then you are at a minimum doubling the load and will definately need to add a relay. If you are removing your stock pump and putting one back by the tank you may or may not need to do so. One thing that I've learned is that automotive manufacturers use the absolute bare minimum when it comes to electrical stuff. There's no way that the wiring in there can handle double the load - if it could they would have put smaller wiring on there. JMHO

Im installing a Carter 4600 in adition to my lift pump. I think the same as Steve S. I think the pump draws 4 amps. Where would I mount the relay? Any special relay to get?

Steve, quick question....

Ire-read your post on this pump in your sig, and how mush would reliablety be improved by adding a small fuel before the pusher pump with the Enterprise kit? I plan on getting one at Munice but was wondering this.

777 - I just bought a 30 amp relay at the local electronics store, a larger relay doesn't cost much more than a lesser one - I figure the extra capacity will help with cooling. I simply mounted mine to one of the bolts on the inner fender lip under the hood.

TxD - no clue on that one, I simply put the pusher pump on there with no pre-filter, there's a screen on the tank pickup and they didn't feel it was necessary for the stock pump. Of course we all know the reliability of the stock pump setup so ... . . So far almost 45,000 miles now on my setup and the pressures haven't changed at all.

Get the pigtail!!!!

Go to Cummins and get the male/female connector for the lift pump, You will be glad you did. You can make a good sealed connection out on the work bench and then just plug it in to the lift pump and then plug the power wires into the harness. Part # 4025182 about $7. 48;)

No doubt, use the relay and splice into the hot wire that powers the original Carter and use same to trigger the relay for the pusher pump. I did the same as Bow hunter, bought a 30 amp. relay from RS, works great.

Boost Pump

Steve,

I want to thank you for putting up all your pictures and information. Today I orderd the boost pump kit from,

http://www.enterpriseengine.com/

It now comes with a relay.

I also ordered the fuel pressure gauge & two sending units from,

http://www.xks.com/SW Pages/swgaug11.html

My 98. 5 Ram has only 32000 miles on it, still has original lift pump.

I got one of Briarhoppers Test Gauges, this was my first test last week. Pre filter test show, idle 11. 5#, WOT 7#, cruise @ 65 mph 9. 5#
