nfox... your 12 valve Cummins will not need a pusher pump as your fuel pump is mechanical and driven by a lobe on the camshaft. Its as reliable as anything else on the engine. Not so with the electric pump. The electric pump is found on 24V engines... and is often times much less reliable.



If I had the lobe on my camshaft... I'd have already done a mechanical pump.
 
If you looked at the line on a dyno sheet with a high HP engine, there are small "spikes" on the HP line. When an engine is getting all the fuel it can from the lift pump, there are a series of real quick spikes. At lest thats what it looks like to me. I think a pusher in line would help smooth out the fueling issue the lift pump has. Remember, the lift pump works just like an oil pump. There is no constant feed of the fuel. And too, it's sucking/drawing all the way from the tank. True the pump would still pump the same but the fuel would be in line, under pressure for the lift pump.



Just a theory. . don't nail me to a cross for my opinion.

If you want a more steady fuel supply, consider a FASS conversion? Someone else here has done it to a 12v. Don't recall his username.



I don't think it would help to add a pusher on a mechanical pump. The pumping assembly is only gonna handle so much fuel. It's only a plunger type pump (fixed displacement). The pump is only going push a set amount on each stroke. To use a pusher, the mechanical pump is only going restrict the flow from the pusher.

KRS, I have a 95 and I have changed 2 lift pumps. I have 155000K + which I guess isn't that bad but these pumps I"m told are designed to push fuel. The closer they are located to the tank the better. The OEM pump has to pull the fuel due to its location, causing it to work harder. True the 12 valves aren't as prone to failure as the 24v, but insurance doesn't hurt. I've been meaning to ask Gary about the Carter pumps on his link. I don't want to spend the $$ for the FASS. I think It would be way over Kill for mine. Don't know what the Carter would run. I run about 220hp right now. After I get my new transmission I hope to increase to around 350hp or 400ish. I don't know if the stock lift pump will stand up to that. Jwhitmore had a thread on this a while ago that was interesting.
 
I got two brand new electric fuel pumps made by kem, and going to try one out inline with my mechanical fuel pump, if i don't like it, i will take it back off. :D
