Over the past two months my auto trannie has started doing a strage thing. When I put the truck into drive and step on the accelerator nothing happens. My engine revs but it's as if I'm in neutral. This has only happened 4 times in two months but I know this problem will probably get worse, not better.

I fried my auto trannie last September while on vacation. It had 93k. I ended up spending three unexpected weeks in Bozeman. I redid the trannie. Added a Transgo shift kit and a Pro-Loc troque converter. I already had a BD pressureloc and exhaust brake.

Whenever the problem happens I put the trannie into park then back to drive, and everything is fine.

I'm pulling the 5er to an airshow this weekend in Florida. Dont' want to get stranded some where between.

Thanks for any help and advice.

BC,

Your shift indicator may be off just a little so that it shows that you are in drive when it's not quite. Try pulling down on the shift lever a little bit the next time that happens.

Double check your fluid level. It is OK to overfill these a quart or so. What you're describing happens to some transmissions sometimes. If it sits long enough, the torque converter drains and must refill before you can move the truck. If that is what it is, no problem.

If you are concerned, maybe you check your trans pressure. NAPA makes a guage kit but I bought a different scale gage to use, the one that comes with the kit has too broad a scale.

Thanks for the info.

I'm sure we were in gear. My wife told me it has happened to her twice. What she does to correct the problem is let off on the accelerator, the rpms drop to normal, then push on the accelerator again. The truck goes. She doesn't redo the gearing at all.

My trannie fluid level is right on the mark... checked when it's warm and in neutral.

I am coming due for an auto trannie fluid/filter change. When I do I'll blow out the system and switch to Amsoil trannie fluid.

I'll keep y'all updated on what I learn.

Bill,

My truck does about the same thing yours does, except mine does it usually after idling for a few minutes in drive (at a stop light). Most of the time a little throttle will make it go--only once have I had to go from drive to park to drive. Seems to be worse when the outside temp is cold. Tony Garcin at Dunrite Converters told me I had a bad seal in the transmission that is common to Dodges. He said the industry knows the part as the "forward clutch inner rubber," but said the Dodge shop manual calls it a "rear clutch inner rubber. " The fix? Drop the transmission, and replace the inner AND outer rubber. Garcin said the part was cheap. I haven't done it because the last time I saw my truck and transmission not connected made me lose my appetite. Good luck.
