I have the pyro gauge from TST and even after the truck has set for a day the gauge reads just over 100. Anyone else with this problem? I don't know for sure if the thing is accurate because of this. Anyone know if you can get them calibrated or not. Kinda expensive to just toss it and get a new one.

I have the ISSPRO gauges from DIS. My pyro read 100 gegrees right out of the box. I called DIS and was told that is not abnormal. It is calibrated at 1200 degrees.

The guage when hooked up is always reading. The thermocouple is not "shut off". If the meter movement is hooked direct to the thermocouple(no amplifiers etc inside)then it will always tell you the difference between the cab and the EGT probe. It assumes the cold junction (cab) is 75f. So if it is sunny on the hood, and your windows were rolled down you would get a reading.

True if the guage is connected to the probe you will just about always have some reading above zero. Mine with the shorting wire still in place with nothing hooked to it read 100 degrees. It looked as though it needed to be zeroed but adjustment of zero wasn't possible.

Most gauges are calibrated at the temperature range somewhere close to the middle of thier range, and are not accurate at either extreme, i would not be concered if it is off a little at either end, you are more concerned about the max temp reading anyway???

jmac,

How do you have time to post on this board? 300,000 miles on a 98???? :)

I have sold many new trucks over the years with EGT gauges and they all do this. We have had to change out many good thermocouples(stinger in trucker terms) to convince drivers that there was nothing wrong with them.

Bill,
Hubby and I transport trailers for a living. Put on about 100,000 miles every 6 months. We are home on the weekends and that's when I try to catch up on the board here. We took a few extra days off this week though. Check out the winter 98 issue of TDR. We were featured in the 24x7 column.

jmac,

I figured you used your truck for commercial use for the high mileage. I was just kidding you.

I have sold medium and heavy duty trucks for nearly 30 years(now retired)and it is not uncommon to see trucks running 100,000 miles, 150,000 or even 200,00 miles a year. With 2 drivers, and 20 hours a day(each driving 10 hours) one can cover a bunch of miles.

It's kinda' hard to pay for a $100K truck or even a $30K truck with it sitting in the driveway.

jmac,

I checked my copy of the Winter 98 of TDR in the 24x7 Column,page 98, and I don't think it's your truck. It's about a 1970 Chev K20 pickup with a 93 Cummins 5. 9B engine in it.
Plesse recheck.

jmac, I remember reading the 24x7 article that featured you and your husband. I'm at work now but, if memory serves, you were relating your positive experiences with the Prime-Loc fuel filter relocation kit, and especially the fuel restriction gauge. Correct? This must have been issue 24 or possibly issue 23. I have this set-up on my '98. 5 ISB as well (including the fuel restriction gauge). I ordered mine the day after the TDR debuted this (the first time) in the TDrelease column. Cummins NW hadn't even heard of the fuel restriction gauge yet. After providing them with the part number from the TDR article, they ordered it for me.

Take care and stay safe on the road jmac.

Bill,
Sorry, I apologize. It was the winter 99 issue #23. Please forgive me?

John,
Yes we did talk up the primeloc. And I still would.
