How many of you do-it-yourselfers took the turbo off when drilling into the exhaust manifold for pre-turbo installation. I know of at least one mechanic that holds a vacuum while drilling into the exhaust manifold to suck up the shavings, and does not unbolt the turbo. Comments or advice??

I didn't remove the turbo on either of the ones I installed. I did use a shop vac to suck up the shavings as I was drilling the holes though. Then I just greased up the tap and went to town. Clean and reapply grease to tap frequently (sp?). make sure you don't tap the hole too deep or the thermo coupling/bushing will not tighten up. You should be able to screw it in 3-3. 5 turns. Use a small mech magnet to remove any shavings of any size. Take your time and all will work out. :D

Good luck Phil

BTW... did I mention TAKE YOUR TIME! ;)

I agree with the above post. I just used a vacuum, after breaking a socket trying to loosen up the turbo bolts. Used some grease on the tap and never looked back. Some other folks on here leave the truck running while drilling so as to blow any of the shavings out, but I didn' t feel comfortable doing that. Good Luck, and once you finish, you'll be glad that you did it yourself. Just a word to the wise, you would want to use a 1/8 NPT probe, just in case you mess up on the first drill/tap sequence, then you could always go up in size to the 1/4 NPT probe. Just in case. James

also realize that any small particles of metal that might happen to be left over are going to be blown right past the turbine and not cause any damage.

I followed the pre-turbo directions found here. I also used a shop-vac. It was actually pretty easy to unbolt my turbo, except for one bolt that is difficult to reach. None of the bolts had seized though.

Yeah what they said. Didnt remove the turbo. BUT make sure you dont run the tap too far!!! I did and had to weld the bushing to the exhaust manifold- saving for an ATS manifold now... Bill

I seperated it and put a piece of cardboard inbetween. I was amazed at all of the shavings that were still in there and I used a magnet and grease and a shop-vac when I drilled and tapped. I also started the truck with the turbo unhooked to blow any extra bits out. Man talk about a cloud of smoke!

i've done six with turbo on ... someone holding shop vac ... i agree with Forrest ... tiny little shavings will blow right through the vanes anyway

Just have some one hold the vacum up to the hole while you drill the hole. Then i use a magnet after the hole is all tapped out. Has worked for me several times just like all the others.
