I Can't Remember Where I Read It , But I Read That The Pyro Sensor Should Be Located In The Exhaust Manifold , But To Be Careful Not To Drill On The Center Where The Divider Is Located. I Just Bought An X-monitor And The Directions Say To Weld The Sensor Fitting Into The Downpipe. I Need Input On This Before I Start The Install.

The downpipe temp location will give readings of temps 250-300 degrees cooler than will readings taken from in front of the turbo. This is when the boost is high and the engine working. I originally put my EGT probe in the down pipe but now have one also in the manifold, just haven't finished hooking it up. It is another one of those "need to finish one of these days" items.

Their are instructions on the piers diesel site. That is where I got mine at.

Drill it the way it says and worked great. Had to borrow a 1/4 pipe tap since my kit did not have one.

ARhine is right on -- those instructions work just fine. If you look at the exhaust manifold, you'll be able to see where it kind of goes down in the center -- that's where the web is. Just split the distance from that to either edge for a good spot to drill. Don't forget to use a punch to prevent wandering! :)

In the early days of pyrometers, they would sometimes break off or shed pieces due to the diesel pulsations and vibration harmonics. When that happened the turbocharger had something to chew on and at close to 100,000 RPM, you can guess the results . . . . Pyrometer material in the past decade has significantly improved and the odds of a piece coming off and going downstream into the turbo from a manifold mount location is almost non existant. Drill carefully. . . .

I definitely agree with mounting it in the exhaust manifold. I had mine in the downpipe for some time and finally got sick of having to "do math" to calculate my EGT's based on boost... .

Use the rear passage of the exhaust manifold and find center.

In my case I have hit some truly horrendous EGT's and the pyro did not fail so you can be pretty secure knowing that, as noted, they pyro's of today are pretty tough.

Just make sure that when you install the pyro it should extend about 1/2 way down the passage height and it should NOT touch the bottom or sides of the passage... after that it's all good... :D:D:D

pb... .
