Hey Buffalo when you dropped the turbo and used the cardboard did you need a new gasket?

Thanks

The gasket between the turbo and exhaust manifold is metal and is reusable. But the gasket between the drain tube and turbo is not... ... try not to disconnect this or you'll need to buy a new one or use high temp gasket sealer (as I did) with the old one.

I agree with you guys... . next one I do I'm just going to remove the turbo, use a piece of carboad or plastic and be done with it. Now that I've removed mine I know how to and can do it pretty quickly. Trick is to remove the front tire and wheel well. This gives you easy access to the turbo and plumbing.

Here is the wall/baffle that everyone is talking about... .

NJTackle,Thanks for the photo. Now I can see exactly what I'm up against and don't have to pull the turbo down all the way to see for myself. A picture IS worth a thousand words!

Exhaust flange bolt torque

As I recall a torque wrench wasn't an option when tightening the the nuts back on, as access to them is severely restricted. I just used a ssmall wrench and go them good and snug by hand, about 3 times after heating and cooling the exhaust over a week.

Also, I never disconnected the oil drain tube. You can drop the turbo about 1/2 inch once the flange nuts are off. That's all you need to slip some plastic or cardboard over the turbo inlet hole. Another trick is to put some axle grease on top of the plastic insert to catch the filings and not let them bounce around in there.

Best of luck to all.

Regards,

Joe

I hate to say it but those tiny shavings, ( the small amount of tiny shavings that might actually fall into the manifold) are not gonna hurt a damn thing when you fire up the truck, they are running through the exhaust side of the turbo, and when they do go through it there is no boost and the turbo is spinning damned slow. I have done several pyro's and did my new ones yesterday, never hurt a thing. It just seems that removing the turbo and all the grease and vacuum tricks are a whole lot of work for nothing.
