Doing the pyro tap this weekend on an ATS Manifold. I cant afford gauges at this time so I am curious if there is a preference / advantage to either the 1/8 or 1/4" ??

Also, is there any special tapping tool required for the metal make up of the ATS Manifolds that I need to worry about or standard tools.

Thanks in advance.

Some are, some aren't. I think its an option but I could be wrong.

You shouldn't require any special tap or drill bit for the procedure, just the right size.

Unless ATS is using some mystery metal that I'm not aware of. :D

I don't think there is any difference between 1/4" and 1/8" other than one requires you drill a bigger hole.

The manifolds are about the easiest material to tap that I've ever machined. They're soft and the chips clean nicely, you shouldn't have any trouble. As for size... the best you can do is call whomever you intend to buy your gauges from and ask them what size THEY sell. It's about a 50/50 split between 1/8 and 1/4. Personally, I'd tap it 1/8 and if your thermoucouple comes in at 1/4 you can always drill it our bigger and retap ;)

i taped mine last weekend... i didn't have the gauge either... i just taped it 1/4"... use a 7/16 drill bit and make sure its a 1/4"pipe tap. if your gauge comes withe the 1/8" sensor just buy an adapter... this way you wont have to go back and retap. if your planing on doing it like that you might as well wait for the gauges before you do it... make sure to get all the metal shavings out!

Thanks for the info folks. My ATS just arrived and I cannot locate the supposed flat spot to do the tap on the center section (unless its the two flat spots on the outer edge of the turbo flange area. I called ATS and the tech there told me that evidently they no longer manufacture it with a flat spot. Curious!!! Gonna search for pics on TDR. I have seen pics and diagrams on where to do it on the original manifold but not on the ATS.

What an annoyance, for $400 you would think they could spend a couple minutes and do the job at the factory.

I got a local tool & die shop to do the drilling and tapping for $25. Looks great. Will post a pic when I get it installed. Went with the 1/8th.

HERE is an article I wrote when I did my Duramax. There is a list in there of what drill sizes to use. . based on the Machinists Manual. I have installed probably 10 thermocouples. If you have any questions feel free.

I typically drill and tap with the engine running. This way the chips blow out the hole as they are released, never falling into the manifold.
