:)Does anyone have any good pics of their pre-turbo pyrometer? After long searching, I have decided that tapping the exhaust manifold is the way to go, but the two pics I was able to find were different in their placement. I got a brand new Quadzilla Recon and am getting anxious to get it in!:)

Why don't try and post the pictures you found.

The one I saw a while ago they tapped where the manifold comes together at main pipe. But don't drill in the center of it you have drill off center (main pipe). But there other ways of doing it.

Go to the Piers Diesel Research website. On the left click on Technical then look for 89-02 Dodge Ram pyrometer installation tips. There you will find a picture of where to place the probe.

got a pretty good pic in my gallery. Drilling the hole was simple but running the tap was a little spooky (dont take it too deep as these are tapered threads)... try to keep the tap as vertical as possible. The grease on the drill tip idea is good and its pretty easy to get an inspection magnet in to clean up whatever shavings get in the manifold...

I checked my old pictures and found a picture of my procedure. The manifold has not yet been drilled in this picture, but it was placed in the rear passage into the turbo, right where the red spot appears in the picture. Also notice the corrugated material I placed between the turbo and the manifold after loosening, but not removing the mounting bolts. That was placed there to eliminate any shavings from the drilling getting into the turbo. It was then removed and the mounting bolts re-tightened after all chips were blown out.

You can certanly remove the turbo to prevent chips from entering, or use a magnet to retrieve them. However I have installed dozenes of pyros and never removed the charger or magneted the chips. They are simply two small to be of any concern. Just use light pressure when drilling to make the chips smaller and when done start the engine. There is more than adiquate clearance to let the chips blow out past the turbine vanes.
