I'm thinking about ordering a three gauge set from Diesel Injection Service (egt, boost and transmission temp).

When installing the pyrometer, how do you drill into the exhaust manifold so that you avoid metal chips going deeper into the manifold (and then blown through the turbo)?

sigh...

Okay, I feel stupid. I found the following at http://www.dieselpage.com/gipda.htm :

"2. Stuff a small shop towel or rag 4 to 5 inches into the rear exhaust manifold passage (see pic below) through the turbocharger mounting flange. This is to prevent chips from entering the manifold while drilling and tapping. "

I guess it pays to poke around a little before posting questions...

Manifold Drilling

Well, I guess I'll start a fire with this comment but here goes just the same. I installed an ISSPRO Pyro that I bought from Big Don a couple of months ago. I talked with him about removing the turbo to do this but he suggested that I drill it WITHOUT removing the turbo, which is something I had thought of doing to begin with. I taped the suction tube from my shop vac to the manifold while drilling the hole. Afterwards, I used a small pencil type magnet to remove those chips that escaped the vac (very few). I then tapped the hole the same way and repeated the magnet trick to remove most of the chips. After all was done, I started the engine and I guess if there were any remaining chips there, they were blown out thru the turbo and down the exhaust pipe. That was 2 months ago and so far, all is well. :D Big Don says he does them that way all the time and has never had a problem with any. It works for him and it worked for me! It may, or may not, work for you so use your own judgment on this one. Racer

How do you know where to install the thermocoupler?

I was told right before the turbo, but not in the middle because the manifold is divided.

Don't worry about No stinkin' metal shavin's

Hey Racer Brown & Midnite!

Great links to the detailed installation instructions!

Racer Brown... No "Fire" on the installation tips... This is an excepted practice for installing the pyro when not wanting to remove or installing a different sized housing. I also know CTD owners that have used this method w/ good results. No Worries!

I've been told that it takes more than a few metal shavings or fines to damage the exhaust turbine. I've even heard stories of folks trying to pass shop rags thru the turbine using the other method & a forgetful memory. (pure fiction, I'm sure)

One advantage to removing the turbo is that it makes for a good excuse to swap to a smaller exhaust housing. :D :) :D This was my method...

KEENO pennies today...
