I was looking around on e-bay a couple of days ago and came across a 2nd gen 3500 dually with a crew cab conversion that was up for auction. seems like it had over 300k on the odo and I can't remember what the bid was at.

Frame question

When a Ram is made into a "Ramburban" or like the Excursion is to the Ford F-250, where does all that frame twist go?

What I mean is it is no longer a pickup but a full size SUV if you will, and that allowance for the frame to twist is now gone. So the truck is now more rigid but...

Just curious!

where is that truck? I would buy it if I could find it. I was also thinking about getting another set of doors added on after seeing maddog's run.

another way to look at it

So you pick up a low mileage 2nd gen and have it converted for another 12k, and you are into it for the mid 20's, which is what you would spend on a nice used Suburban anyway... If this makes sense to you would you help me convince my wife?

Stupid question: What do they make the back doors out of? Are they completely fabricated or do they convert something else?

Re: another way to look at it

The person I spoke with was Mark Bayer. He was very informative and very patient with all my questions. They have 2 people dedicated to doing the conversions. To date he stated they had done nearly 200+ of these type of conversions. Most of their regular business is Semi-Tractor conversions. Turn around time was approx. 45 days with a 30 day lead time. I have seen one of his conversions and did some close up inspection and you couldn't tell it was an aftermarket conversion. His work is very good. Here is the link to his site. He also said he would add any extras if requested. An example would be different fuel cell or additional sound insulation etc.

This is probably totally unrelated, but when I worked down in Mexico (Baja California/Ensenada) I used to see a lot of Dodge Ramchargers. These are not the Ramchargers of old, but 2nd Gen (1500 - though they call them 2500's there) trucks with full bodies. They were two doors (3?) not four doors (5?) and looked to be built on a SWB frame. I also saw a full crew cab 2nd gen truck as well. Dodge (as well as the others) makes a lot of product in Mexico that doesn't see the light of day in the US.

I actually saw a 2nd gen ramcharger here in illinois a couple nights ago. He went threw the intersection and i nearly **** myself looking at this thing. My girlfriend thought something was wrong with me because i looked like this --->. It looked cool. I was like those thing arent supposed to be here!!!! I WANT ONE!

Fantasy Garage

That does it! Yall stink! I can't keep up with the GOTTA-HAVITS I discover on this site. KICK ME OFF PLEASE!!!--no not really. ;)

I had already decided to do a 4-real door 2G--before I heard about Bayer. Now the Charger?

Okay picture this stable:

2G 4x2 24v Quad--got that.

2G 4x4 12v CC auto--got that.

2G 4x4 12v CC 5-speed--looking.

2G 4x4 12v Bayer Crew 5/6 speed--hoo yeah.

2G 4x4 12/24 Ramburban--for the SO.

2G 4x4 24v RamCharger--to support our southermost state. :D

And of course, I have thought of putting the 4BT in a Durango! Stacks would be tacky on the Ramburban wouldn't they?:p

Here is another option

Interesting idea if you don't have to have the 4 doors. Not sure I'm crazy about this particuar example, but its hard to tell from the pictures. I would guess this would be a lot cheaper...

Very interesting thread... I'm planning to keep the truck forever, so the extending the truck is an option and the $10K-$15K is cheap compared to getting a new truck and not knowing what is going to happen to it. My plan is around 10 years or so from now, I'll look into getting it extended and replace any body parts that are starting to rust out from the 4 billion tons of salt they put on the roads here in Omaha. Of course from that time, I'll have to get a new house with a bigger garage to house it... good grief, this truck is going to drive me into the poor house yet.

Yep... ..... Now I gotta haveit. My only question is about towing capacity. My pin weight is 2700 now. Does the extra weight of the conversion lessen the towing limits? Seems it would have to.

I wonder what the "ramburban" conversion goes for?? It would proabably be cheaper to have an excursion coverted to a cummins... but what fun would that be.
