2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Quad door......not opening

A 4 wheeling buddy of mine jerked on the drivers side Quad door the other day and now it don't open. I don't know if it "popped" or what... ... ... he just asked if there was a trick to opening it and the handles don't lever the latch.

What do I need to do to get the door open.



The truck had the same problem when I bought it but the dealer fixed it before I took possesion.



Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks... ... ... I'll give it a try and see how it works for me. I just wonder if they had the latches set to tight to keep the door from whistling or something and it added too much pressure to the handle.

Welcome to the club (cab). I had the dealer fix mine once. Now it's broke again. I finally took it apart and see that my problem will require replacement parts.



The rods, both upper and lower, snap into place into a metal bracket. There are tabs, for lack of a better term that are supposed to help hold onto the threaded ends of the rods. My tabs are so weak, they let go after about 2 or 3 cycles of the door latch. I'd sort of like to blame the dealer for screwing them up the first time they fixed it, but IMHO it looks like a silly design destined for failure anyway.



I guess someday I'll find one in a junk yard and strip parts out of it to fix mine.

I had problems with mine getting worse over time. I had problems opening the driver side door. (It gets used the most) I would gradually have to put pressure on the outside of the door pushing in to get it to open. Then one day, i could not get it open. So i crawled through the passenger door, pulled the inner door panel off and started checking. What i found was that the stud that holds the latch mechanism had loosened up. I believe it was a 10mm socket that fit it. Anyway, tightened it up and it worked perfectly. About a month later, started happening all over again. This time i took the panel off while i could get the door open. Same problem, this time put some locktite on it. Haven't had any trouble for going on 6 months now.

Fixed door!

Well I dove into my drivers side quad door this weekend and found out why it wouldn't open.

As some of you have posted there are two rods that attach to the latch. These two rods are held onto the latch with a hokie little metal spring tab. I can see where a good pull on the latch with some pressure (deep seated door) would pull the rods out of the spring tabs.

I ended up squeezing the spring tab together a little bit, reinstalled the rods and adjusted the door. Before putting the cover back on the door I got some wooden kitchen matches and stuck one each inbetween the spring tab and the back of the tab. It may not work but then again it might keep the spring tabs from weakening, either way I am out two little pieces of wood!





We'll see how it works. Family has been warned about opening door without pushing in on it to release some of the pressure on the rods.

It's an 8mm, and now mine's fixed. You guys are GREAT!

So I went to the dealer for parts. Instead of giving me the metal spring clips, they gave me what appear to be nylon bushings, for lack of a better term. I had to grind the pin off the old metal tabs, and the nylon parts snap in that same hole on the swivel. Then they have slots that just attempt to grip the threaded rods. I put it together, and both doors worked three times before the nylon let go of one of the rods and fell apart again.



After playing around with operating the rods manually, reaching through the access hole and just pulling on them, it seems to me my problem might be door alignment. As hard as I have to pull on the rods to unlatch them, there's no part in the world, metal, nylon, or otherwise that will withstand that abuse.



Now I'm in way over my head. I have no idea how to adjust the door and even if I did, which way or how much to move it. I'm tempted to go get a couple bids at a body shop and see what happens. I'm getting tired of this project.
