I am looking at retiring in either Idaho or Washington. I am unfamiliar with the tax laws in either state. Having worked hard for my “delayed compensation”, I wish to keep as much of it as possible.

As a military retiree is my federal retirement taxable, of so at what rate do they use?

What is the state tax rate schedule for Idaho and Washington?

Comments about either state for quality of living, I am looking at the Coeur D’Alene/Spokane areas? I am not looking at living in the city, but in the county with at least 20 acres of land.

Thanks,

Michael

No state income tax in WA but the sales tax is high so it probably balances out with Idaho's relatively low income and sales tax.

Problem in E WA is that you're ruled by the folks in Seattle who make up the majority of the state's population by far. In Idaho the population is spread around for a more equal representation in government.

It always sucked when I lived in E WA and Westside liberals laid down all the laws. Idaho is much more conservative state.

The Spokane-Post Falls Idaho area is basically one city now but there is plenty of acreage to be found close by in both states.

It's just my opinion but the Post Falls to C d' A area looks raped from a century of mining.

Nice areas, either one. No state income tax in Wyo. either. If you don't mind clean air and a little breeze now and then:rolleyes:

All I know is when they held the e-bonics beauty pageant, none of the girls wanted to be "Miss I da ho":p

Good luck and enjoy your retirement. 35 more years and I'll join ya.

Which State?

Of course Oregon does not have a sales tax - but does have income tax of 9%. Federal retirerment is not taxed (But State Retirement is - go figure). Property taxes depend on where you live but would be lower out in the sticks. Car registration is $30 per year regardless of the vehicle. I wouldn't live in Washington tho - sales tax is pretty high. . Other than that - hmm maybe Nevada - no state income tax - but sales tax. Don't know about Idaho ! Happy Moving wherever you go !

:D

justme, sorry for the delayed response to your post, I just came across it. I live just a bit south of Coeur d'Alene. As to the tax-issue, WA vs. ID, it's a tough call. Idaho has income tax, WA does not, I understand WA has higher property tax. I prefer the Idaho area, the politics are less left-leaning, some very pretty country, good hunting and fishing, lots of national forest to play in. I'll look up info on income tax rates, PM me and I'll let you know about property tax rates as well.

If you decide to make the move and are interested, my house is for sale, PM me or respond here and I'll let you know details. It's only 10 acres though (the place we are moving to is on 20).

Oh yeah, one thing to keep in mind, firearms ownership is a requirement for residency;)

Quality of Life Issue

Micheal

I have lived all my life some 35 miles east of Seattle. However, my wife and I are doing everything to move to Northern Idaho or Western Montana. In WA it is extremely liberal, property tax it ultra high and they are seriously looking for a state income tax not to mention the traffic and overpopulation. Funding for the state is poor. Good luck on the move. If you do find a place I would be interested in a PM as to the area you decided on and why.
