Red Skelton's Pledge

Since we have a lot of Canadian members I think I can ask this questiion.

We will betraveling across Canada this Sept. to the Gaspe Penn and then on to Nove Scotia and Maine. Will we have any problems communicating with people?

We don't speak French.

Rclarke,

I was in and around Quebec a couple of years ago. The tourist town had plenty of bilingual people. I think I saw more US liscense plates than Canadian in the city. In the outlying rural areas we had problems, and had to rely on our Canadian Army hosts to translate for us. I've found that the "Dumb American" act works pretty well when you can't speak the native tongue.

good luck, have fun.

Quebec, No Problem

Travelling in Quebec does not normaly pose any problems. Most places you will stop, someone will speak english, generaly most young people will be bilingual and quite willing to speak to you. Also be prepared to spend more for fuel, 8 to 10 cents more per litre, so if you can fill up before entering Quebec do so.

After spending the last three years running "The Swamp" ,or Montreal as most call it,the only thing I can add is this,,In some spots you may have problems with communications but for the most part you'll be ok,,Make sure you convert your money to Canadian as I have seen more than one person get taken like that,,Most Qubec interstate roads leave alot to be desired as far as conditions go,people down here who complain of rough roads will not after a trip thru there,,Make sure you top off for fuel on the T-Can somewhere around Cornwall,Ont for best fuel prices,Qubec fuel is noted as the highest in the area,,One last thing,to travel thru Montreal do it between the hours of 7pm and 6am,after that you will not believe what your eyes will see,,Its like a real live version of Grand Theft Auto or a good game of Bumper Tag 101,,I've been to most all major cities in the US due to driving truck, but ,NOTHING and I mean NOTHING compares or even gets close to Montreal in either rush hour,,I'd rather travel thru Atlanta,GA during rush hour than Montreal,,Once you get east of the big city its some of the most beautiful countryside you'll ever see all the way to the coast,,Hope you enjoy the trip and take lots of photos, see ya when you get back... ...
