Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Question 2 trannies into one?

I have 2 CTDs with broke trannies. A rancher cousin has suggested building one transmission from the 2. They are from a 97 2wd cab & chassis and a 99 3/4 4wd. The 99 lost the gears and the 97 has shift tower assembly problems we think.

Any ideas if this can be done?
