Competition guage ?

Well, with the pulling season nearing and pretty much everything ready on the truck there is one last thing I want/need and thats a tach. I GM cluster has a nice one that goes up to 6000rpm but I am interested in one with Memory or Playback.

I have heard of a few guys running some but don't know what there like to hook up. I have heard that you can't run a normal gasser tach with the diesel but know that someone must have used one prior to AutoMeter comming out with there Diesel Tach.

My truck actually pics up RPM from the Alternator instead of the pickup on the crank like the cummins did stock. Not sure if that will make a difference or not.

Anyone have any idea's or comments

Thanks in advance... RyanB

Stewart Warner has an anolog 6k diesel tach no replay or recall they also have a digital unlimited rpm tach they call a G. U. S. has max reacall but no replay. If you really want to spend some money you could get a Intella Dash from Corsa Data loggers witch will have max recall for boost egt and rpm a very nice unit but pricey.

Ryan,

Auto meter has a 5'' tach 0-6000 rpm has a recall feature and is a very nice unit. Note, you have to mount the crank sensor they supply with the tach. You'll have to mill two more notches on the balancer, it requires 4 total one at every 90 degrees. Haven't run mine yet bottom end is at the machine shop. There part number is #6806

Thanks for the info guys? But does anyone know what it might take to make an actual gasser style tach work? Any way of changing the signal that the tach is seeing? anyone know what kind of measurement a gasser tach needs and what a diesel tach would have?

RyanB

Ryan, where did the factory tach feed from on the GMC? I know that the dodge one is 5v from the Engine speed sensor (ESS) to the ECM then to the tach.

It feeds right off the Alternator pickup. When I did the conversion in order to get the factory tach to work (didn't work from the signal off the balancer) I had to have the Dodge alternator wired for a tach wire... worked perfectly once done!!!

Any idea's

To my knowledge, you can't unless somebody out there makes some type of retro-kit or something. The gasser tach usually takes its signal directly from the ignition coil (something you obviously can't do), whereas all the diesel tachs are inductive. I could be wrong, would be interested to see how it's done if I am

vdo makes the tachs for our marine engine packages. they have different styles and different style pickups, might not be a bad idea to check with them

Haisley Machine as well as Enterprise engine carry Stewart Warner Digital tachs with a recall feature.
They have a converter box that allows the tach signal to be read off the stock Crank sensor.

Here is the Intellidash/Corsa system that Craig is talking about. As a matter of fact this one came directly out of his truck last year after his rookie wheelman broke it at the EEP Charity Pull last year... ... Andy

BTW Craig. .

I have not forgot about the photos either. I could not find them and just did tonite on my old computer spare drive. I will get them to you soon.
