Am ready to order a 2018 . Leaning towards the Aisin trans with 4.10 gears . How many rpm's will engine run at 65 mph? How many rpm's at 70 mph ?? How many rpm's at 80 mph??? . I usually tow at 65 on two Lane roads , and tow at 70 on interstate . The speed limit is 80 on interstate . Will run empty at 80 . If Anyone with Aisin trans and 4.10 gears can respond I will appreciate it . Want to know what I'm getting into rpm wise with the speeds I will be running .

You'll be happy with the 4:10's. Plenty of power on hills and stays in 6th most of the time when towing.

I also like knowing that my truck is set up for maximum towing ability and I can get a heavier trailer without worrying about being overloaded.

Aisin 6th gear is 0.63, so with 32" tires and 4.10's, 65=1760, 70=1896, 80=2167 RPM

Nick

I think if you adjust your tire size number using the tires static loaded radius then 4:10's at 60 MPH are around 1750 RPM and not at 65 MPH at that RPM. Based on using around 29.8" diameter it comes out very close to what user Cummins12V98 reports.

60=1747, 65=1893, 70=2039, 80=2330 RPM

What are you going to tow???? If you are not going to tow heavy, you might want to consider taller gears.
I computed these numbers using a diameter of 29.8 based on static loaded radius of a LT235/80R17E note the advertised tire diameters do not work well in gear calculators.

4:10 at 80 = 2330 RPMs (tow rating 30,320)
3:73 at 80 = 2120 RPMs (tow rating 25,020)
3:42 at 80 = 1949 RPMs (tow rating 20,520)

I agree.

The numbers NIsaacs posted are closer to my 3.73 equipped truck with LT235/80R17 tires....

Will be towing a 44' toyhauler at about 20,000 lbs loaded . Right at 13' tall , goes almost to the ground , big sidewalls . Want to hear from someone that has a Aisin trans and 4.10 gears . What rpm engine turns at 65 , 70 , and 80 mph . I Know the 3.73 ratio is rated up to 25,000 lbs towing . But checking to see if 4.10 ratio will be a better fit rpm wise at speeds I will be driving . Again will tow at 65 on two Lane and at 70 on interstate loaded , then very little driving empty , but at up to 80 on interstate

The problem is 4:10's at 80 will suck big time. It's just me, but I would go with 3.42's and tow at 65 MPH in 5th at 1930 RPM.

Here is the cal I am using.
https://www.ringpinion.com/calculators/Calc_RPM.aspx

4th is 1.0 5th .77 and 6th .63
I am using 29.8 as diameter.

Forget 3.73, as 6th is a little to low at 65 for that weight and little to high in 6th. It is 3.42 is 5th or 4:10 in 6th, with sucky high speed cruising.

Have fun. Snoking

If your Combined is never going to exceed 29K go with the 3.42's. Anything over that I highly suggest the 4.10,s.

I tow at 60 at around 1,750 at a combined 33-35K+ the Aisin makes getting the load rolling a dream with the 4.10's. The 3.42's will net about the same rpm in 5th.

Solo I get 16 at 70 and 18 at 60. That is no stops from fill to fill.

My 11 HO Dually had 3.42's I towed 29K combined and would tow in 5th. ONLY negative was the 68RFE getting the load rolling. Aisin makes that no issue with it's lower starting gears.

So...if we are using 29.8 as an exact number, what is the air pressure, tire new, used or worn out? Is the truck empty, half loaded, fully loaded or overloaded? What brand of tire, highway, mud grip or all season, how many ply and what material is the ply's? What year and color of the truck?

No I don't own a 4th gen and yes I used a gear calculator, my bad:rolleyes:

Wow ! Does anyone on this forum have a late model ram 3500 dually with an Aisin trans and 4.10 gears ?? If so , can anyone tell me how many rpm's you run at 70 mph loaded ???????

In another thread I notice the numbers for diameter did not match what was being seen out of the road by myself with 3.42's and Ron with his 4.10's. So I looked up the static loaded radius and plugged that in X 2. And it came out very close to what we are see in real use on the highway! You are welcome to take that or not. NP

Cummins12V98 has 4.10 and turns about 1750 in 6th at 60, which matches what I computed. So at 65 the cal says RPMs will be 1893.

If you look at the signature at the bottom you can see what we drive.

I have a 2014 DRW with 4:10 and Aisin. My RPM is similar to the others.

Thanks for the quick responses , I'm trying to make the decision on what gears and your help is appreciated . Sounds like the 4.10 is best for my needs . Don't drive often at 80 , most times at 65 to 70 . Also only way to get max tow package is with the 4.10 ratio .

I own a 2016 with aisin and 4.10. I love it and I omly tow about 21k total. I don't really remember what the RPM is when towing at certain speeds. I do know I'm not over reving or anything else. It is VERY comfortable. Empty, the truck is a rocket. I LOVE it. Best truck I have ever owned. I'm pretty sure the RPM 12V98 gave are very close. Get the 4.10 and don't look back...

This is what my 2017 dually with 4.10 gears and 235/80/17 tires is running

I have one... it's about 1850 at 60 mph... my 2015 with 3:42s was less than 1500 rpms at 60 . If towing is more important, then 4:10....if speed and mileage is what you're after, then 3:42..for me, it was 4:10...

I've got a '17, 3500 dually with Aisin and 4.10. Haven't towed heavy yet but around 2000rpm's at 70, 1800-1900 at 65.
