i have heard that all dana 80 in dodges are hybrids and the only difference is between the 3500 dully axles and 2500 srw axles is the hubs i have also heard that the 2500 srw is a hybrid and the 3500 dully axle is a full dana 80 which is true and also the dana 80 hybrid is susposed to be an 80 center section with dana 70 axle tubes and shafts it this true about the 80 hybrid

basically i have a 70 in my 96 2500 and want to upgrade to a dana 80 is the hybrid really much stronger or which axle should i put in my truck

thanks

ken

The dana 70 uses a smaller ring gear, carrier, pinion diameter, pinion bearings, yolk. The 80 and 70 utiize the same 35 spline axle. The center section on the 70 is smaller. Teh DRW 3500 and SWR 2500 (80 and 70) are very different beasts. Although, the 80 is utilized on the swr 2500 with a manual transmission.

How do ya tell what rearend you have in your truck... i got 2 in question... . a 97 with automatic. . and a 99 with the 5 speed. thanks... looking for a conversion kit to make the 97 a dually, and the 99 maybe... got a smokin deal on 2 dually beds... so who knows??

From Dave Fritz's page: "Dana 80 2500 axles and 3500 axles are identical except for the outer wheel spindle and hub assembly. "

I think the 80 (std or hybrid) is regarded as measurably stronger than the 70 and guys who do various competitions frequently upgrade to 80s when they blow their 70s up. Not to say the 70 isn't plenty strong enough for what you want. If you haven't broken it yet...

Your 97 is probably a 70 and the 99 an 80 hybrid. If you have one of each the 80's center section should be noticably taller than the 70, so they should look different when compared.

Actually, there is definately some misinformation here. I swapped out my 70 for an 80 and the tubes are definately bigger. We couldn't use my stock ubolt plates as proof, the diff is much larger looking. You can tell if it's an 80 or a 70 if you do some measuring from your front and rear diffs as far as the diff cover bolts are. The Dana 60 (front) diff cover would actually bolt onto a Dana 70 diff but not the dana 80. That's an easy way to tell. The Dana 70 also does NOT have 35 spline shafts. At least not all of them. There are variations. I had 32 spline shafts in the 70 and have 35 spline shafts in the 80. All SRW, 2001. 5. The 70 in mine was from an automatic, and the 80 came from a truck with a manual.

ASTAR, I have seen exactly waht you are talking about with the axles. My 01 2500 auto had 35 spline shafts, while an identical equipted truck ( except it was an 01. 5) had 32 spline. Many of the D80 in heavier applications have 37 spline shafts.

The Dana 80s in the Dodges are 35 spline. While there are applications where the axle shafts are 37 spline they are not an 8 on 6. 5 bolt pattern.

AFAIK all the 37 spline 80s are 10 bolt hubs.

Gus,

You seem to be knowledgeable about 37 spline axleshafts. I've accidentally bought a No Slip locker for my Dana 80 that was for 37 spline axleshafts, and I'm wondering if there's a 37 spline axleshaft that would swap for my standard 35 spline axles so I could go ahead and use it with an upgrade to my axles. Do you know of any? My truck is a 2002 2500.
