Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Question about high idle.

When I bought my truck, it was supposed to have high idle enabled. I tried it one morning a couple weeks ago and it never went up. It will be in the 20s in the morning, so I will check it again. How long after I start the truck should it idle up? Do I have to hit the parking brake. Also, can I put it in neutral and have the parking brake on. Truck's going to the dealer tomorrow so they can see the ball joints they said they replaced but didn't

Well, it has to be a bit below the 32 degree point and set out for many hours (overnight), and can not be plugged in. It should idle up after 15 seconds or so, if you do not have your foot on the service brake. Parking brake is not effected. Why would you take it out of park???



Just an fyi, they have to turn on the 3 cylinder feature to enable the high idle feature.

Mine kicks in when the outside temp is about 20 or below and truck has sat outside for about 12 hours or more. I have never been cold enough to get the 3 cylinder cut out to kick on .

That 3 cyl feature can scare the hell out of you if you don't know about it. I thought a rod was coming thru the block first time I heard it! Mine won't idle up unless cold soaked & below around 10f or so. But its been a couple of years since its done it. Last time was around the time I installed my Espar.

If you are talking about the idle up using the cruise buttons, it is only on the 3rd gens 03. 5 and up. Mine is an early 03 and was not available.



I put a quarter turn locking throttle cable on mine. Pics are in my RR's. Works better because I can stick it on the rpm's I want.

There was a post awhile back with some info about high idle(searched and cant find it) and it said something about grounding out pin #22-PTO- with a toggle to get high idle... ... ...



Anyone have any info on this? It was awhile ago I saw the post so dont quote my on the pin #... ... 22 maybe 24????

That would explain why it hasn't kicked in. The lowest it has gotten is in the mid 20's at night.

Put your gear selector in neutral to circulate trans fluid so your tran can warm up a bit.

Isnt that the orange "PTO" tagged wire hangin out of the harness on the cowl?

I think either a "pto" opiton must be selected, or just the rpm set with the dealer computer tool, whatever its called --drbII? Anyway, that didnt work for me, but has for others.



As far as high idle, try cleaning the IAT. I get high idle around the freezing mark, and 3-cyl in the low teens. It seems to take about 60 seconds to take effect.



I'll note that above 20 degrees, I pretty much skip the WTS light so the grid heater doesnt throw offf the IAT reading. The heater runs after start, but inst as much an influence when it starts with cold air already blowing past it.
