In 2003 Dodge began offering the HO motor with an automatic behind it. I have looked at the build sheets for a couple of the used trucks I have considered buying and they both had the 48RE behind the HO. Can I assume that if I see an HO with an automatic that it is a 48RE, or was this just a coincidence? In other words, does anyone know if the 48RE is the only automatic offered with the HO?

Can anyone summarize the differences between the 47 and the 48?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Is the general concensus that the 48RE was an improvement over the 47RE, or does it merely have different strengths and weaknesses?

Yes the 48 is much improved over the 47, having said that, it still has the same CRAPPY torque converter though.

Don't quote me on this and I'm not entirely sure what it means but here is my understanding of "48RE": 4= 4-speed (3 speedwith O/D), 8= Convertor capacity (???), R= Rear Wheel Drive, and E=Electronic controlled. I got this information from my 1995 Dodge Ram service manual. My '95 had the 5. 9L (360) gas engine with the 46RH. Meaning "4" speed, "6" convertor capacity, "R"ear wheel drive, "H"ydraulically controlled. I don't understand the "convertor capacity". That 46RH by the way cost me a lot of grief by fellow Dodge owners. The 46RH was notororius for being weak. I put 96,000 miles on my 1995 pulling a car hauler weighing about 5,000 pounds on a regular basis without fail! Tribute that to good, consistant maintenance as that fluid and filter never saw life past 25,000 miles. I treat my 48RE the same way but it has a nasty habit of shifting into O/D and then back out under light to moderate acceleration and when the truck is climbing a slight grade. And only when empty. Of course my dealership tells that is normal and that I need to lean into the truck a little more heavily to smooth the shifts out. Whatever. My fix has been to turn off the O/D until I am ready to cruise. I know that may seem dumb but it as calmed my frazzled nerves and returned my love of this truck. Just my . 02 cents.

Let me correct something here. I got the "definition" for the 46RH from my 1995 Service Manual, not the 48RE information. I made a deduction and almost 100% positive I am right... ..... (famous last words!)
