Question about hot-shots...

Forgive my ignorance, but what in the world does a hot-shot mean when referring to hauling stuff? I thought maybe that was those guys that haul cars on those wedge type gooseneck trailers, but I think I've got the wrong idea... We use hot-shots at work to pickup critical cargo at the airports and haul-balls straight to the customer, but I take it you guys are talking about something different... Thanks

In the oil patch, we're generally talking about a commercial carrier who runs a 3/4 or 1-ton pickup or 1-ton cab & chassis with a "hot shot" bed, usually pulling a gooseneck trailer, who contracts to run a dedicated load. That is, we might call a "hot shot" service to take a turbocharger or compressor cylinder from one of our repair centers directly to a customer location.

Hot shot means expendiated service normally direct from point A to point B without additonal pick-ups or going to terminal. Hot Shots can be from a letter courier to a full semi.



Most common definition is for the smaller pick-up and trailer loads than full tractor trailer loads.
